Welcome back John! You are not the only person I have come across in recent months who has returned to the cultural haven that is the borough of Ealing. Yes, it has changed, however, it remains MILES better than the rest of London if not the UK.

Ealing's Good. It is holding its own in spite of everything. We still have a library, an excellent Borough Historian, multiple centres of many different faiths (a spiritual place), many pubs that don't need security guards, And the wheelie bin saga, while clearly substandard by Ealing standards, can easily seen to be not as bad as soon other places (Bournemouth for example is wheelie bin mayhem). And quite a lot of the councillors still do care. Let's keep it there.

Only West Ealing has got worse in the last few years. The better bits of Ealing have got better.

South Ealing has few problems though. Lots of fly-tipping and dumping by many of the shops and businesses along it. There is also a drug problem that the police admit that they cannot do much about.

The Police know where the drugs are being sold but don't have the manpower to deal with it. Probably worse in other parts of London though.

Or they lack the powers to do anything it. I am referring to the network of mobile-phone/text enabled bicycle and moped drug couriers that operate around South Ealing nightly. Sadly you are right, it is worse elsewhere. It is all relative.

I know its not a problem unique to South Ealing, it is more a fact of urban life. The police just can't stop moped and bicycle-riding kids. However, if you see some sort of in-passing handover between a bicycle or moped riding kid and someone just standing there thats the sort of thing to look out for. The South Ealing Cemetry features frequently in this business as do the less obvious off-main-street walkways like Baillies Walk, Roberts Alley, and even some of the main-street street corners. I repeat this isn't an Ealing thing, its something that is part of the way that the distribution of illicit substances operates thesedays.

I shop in South Ealing Road a lot more than I used to because of the ease of parking. No one has ever tried to sell me drugs. How unfair. The butcher there is very good.

I'd leave if the location wasn't ideal for work, travel into London and my family & friends nearby.One of London's better areas still but even saying that makes me shudder!!!

I think that you are safe, Susan. The drug dealers don't approach people on the streets (thankfully). It is all done by mobile phone and text. The excellent and brave article "Parts of Hanwell Becoming 'No-Go' Areas Say LocalsWho claim that children are being recruited by drug dealers" elsewhere in EalingToday gives an insight into what is happening across the country.I have wondered if stopping pavement-cycling and pavement-moped-ing youth might help impede the drug dealres.
