Three minutes ago I was able to get my petition to save 7 libraries submitted. Seems OK now.

We need to find additional uses for libraries so that more people need and want to visit them ie make sure that they are more of a community hub than just a library.

People do use them for more than just borrowing books. You could pop down to your local one and see what’s going on instead of making assumptions based on experience 30 years ago.There are talks, one tonight at Northfields for example, sewing clubs, kids events, etc. People use them to access the internet if they have no access st home. They are used for study.What they are suitable for depends on the building. You couldn’t hold salsa classes or cookery demonstrations in them.Even if they were just for people to borrow and enjoy books getting rid of them is the wrong thing to do.Last day of the petition today so please sign it if you haven’t already,

I have signed it and I have only ever actually used the main library in the 30 plus years I've lived here.  Where is the info about all the things that happen in the local libraries?  I've never seen anything that I can remember in Around Ealing!!  I used to find it difficult to use the main library because it wasn't open when I wasn't working. I've never seen computer courses for silver surfers offered there. Or IT for those with failing sight as the Middx  Assn for the Blind offer.  (Both things I've looked for recently.)

If i remember correctly, when the council shut down our public toilets they cited the bogs in our libraries as one of the alternatives. When they shut down something it was always "it can be done at the library". The local office at the Lady Margaret roundabout is an excellent example. The local libraries were more than libraries, they were for a while a vital service.I guess it's not only bulls that come out with it.

There could be more publicity about events at the libraries, but  of course it’s up to the Council to advertise them if they are Council sponsored events.As I’ve pointed out before the pages of Around Ealing could be used for such information, indeed it could carry a comprehensive listing for all events for the coming months. It would be a lot more useful than the ramblings of Comrade Bell.Drop into Northfields library when it’s open and you will see that it’s pretty busy most of the time. When I moved to Northfields some years ago it was open late for a few evenings, which made it very useful for anyone getting off the Tube.We were told at last week’s meeting, which wasn’t held at the library but at a (presumably) hires church hall, that borrowing numbers have fallen but are still reasonably strong.
