Commemorative  poppies

Last week whilst on afternoon poppy 'duty' in my mobility scooter at Waitrose West Ealing, it was nice to meet several 'Ealing Today' members who came to say hello.  As always, it was a pleasure, privilege and, at times, a moving experience to attend every day with my colleague 'Morning shift George' and to meet so many nice people. Last year we raised just over £3.800, I reckon we have topped that!  So many moments to remember.   The young man who said 'You sir, represent a generation that I greatly admire and sadly will never see the like again. May I have the honour to shake your hand' - as he squeeezed a £20 note in the tin.    The young lady who bestowed a kiss with the words 'Thank you and your kind for the quality of my life'   The Nun who offered a blessing with similar sentiments.  The elderly charming lady who said 'I lost my husband in 1944.  His aircraft crashed over Normandy leaving me with 2 young children. My memories are every day, I still miss and love him'.  I too choked, as a tear trickled down her cheek.    With a queue forming how does one respond to the young children who ask 'What's the flower for mummy?  Hopefully, more fully explained at home.   A profusion of heart string tugging moments that make it so worthwhile, so thank you kind folk, not only for your generosity, but also the pleasure of meeting you all.      Warm thanks are also due to the manager and staff of Waitrose who look after George and myself so well.   One last thought, neither of us are getting any younger so if anyone fancies a 'shift' next year to give us a break, please 'shout' you would enjoy the experience and we would be grateful.

Hanwell Carnival 2017 - June 17th

It's already in the planning stages - no rest for the wicked etcThere are specific jobs we need Treasurer - book keeping, invoicing  balancing the books etc Someone with business and marketing acumen to come on board and help us get sponsorship and identify any money-making opportunities Help with the programme – both with the layout (InDesign/Photoshop) plus writing and subbingSports Zone Manager to liaise between carnival and the clubs making sure they have the space etc they need and we have the logos, info and photos for the programme and social media. All are voluntary positions of course. All other ideas and input gratefully received I can send fuller job descriptions

Catholic Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster

I was shocked to see tonight's B.B.C. 6.00 p.m news. Mr Nichols was asked by reporter Martin Bashir regarding the E.U. crisis, "What is the Christian and Biblical response to this crisis."Mr Nichols replied, "It goes back to the very fundamental question posed by God [to Cain after he had murdered his brother Abel] "Are you not your brothers keeper."Genesis 4v9 actually reports that after God had asked Cain, "What have you done with your brother" it was Cain who stated, "I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper." According to the news report Mr Nichols credits God for uttering words that were uttered by the murderous Cain.

G&S Opera this week in Ealing... a real treat!

Gilbert & Sullivan fans there is a real treat at the Questors Theatre, Mattock Lane W5, as from Wednesday 16th November until Saturday, Julian light opera plus a professional Orchestra performing 'Princess Ida'. Great singing, scenery, and bargain tickets for £10 on Weds(7.45).

Leo Rosso , S Ealing Rd now owned by Santa Maria

From facebook NorthfieldsIn response to the comments about The Red Lion and the apparent death of its heritage I would like to offer a slightly different opinion, my parents purchased the Red Lion 15 years ago and they worked hard to create a fabulous environment, not everyone might agree but that's how I feel, when Santa Maria arrived next door we had no idea how it would impact our family and our future, but I fell in love with one half of Santa Maria and we now have our own family, after the passing away of my mother my dad and my brother continued with the pub but as my Dad felt retirement was coming his way and the Boys at Santa Maria wanted more space it made sense to sell to them and not to complete strangers. The fact that Pasquale and Angelo have seen how much the pub is loved and want to keep things the way they are is a blessing and one I am truly grateful for but in terms of turning it into a pizza express you might be surprised to know they were offered a sell out scenario years ago and decided it wasn't the way they wanted to go, they want to keep a heart and soul in what they are creating and believe they can only do that with them at the helm. In this day and age when pubs are literally closing down all over the place I am thrilled to see the Red Lion busy and receiving some love and care, even some of our hard core regulars are loving the new vibe and they are happy to bear with us while we find our feet. So thanks to all of you who are supporting us !! We hope to continue to offer award winning beer in award winning environments just with a new offering of London’s best pizzaSo it's saved, and you can eat pizza outside now!

Energy Boost

Energy Therapists will be at the London Buddhist Vihara, The Avenue, W4 1UD on Monday, 14th November, between 11am and 1pm (last session 12.45).  The session takes about 15-20 minutes and I am sure that you will feel really good at the end of that time, with lots of vital energy to enable you to enjoy the rest of your week!  A number of therapists come in each month and give their services free.  The Vihara kindly allow us to use the hall at no charge so a donation is most welcome as this enables us to give all donations to the Vihara.These sessions are not related to any religion, everyone is welcome.

Scout Bazaar - Saturday 12th November  - Isleworth & Syon School - 1.00 pm

1st Osterley are a local successful Scout Group, offering exciting activities based on the scout programme.The HQ is in the alley next to 61 Osterley Road, close to St Mary's Church.  They get no central funding, and depend on income from termly subscriptions and fund raising events such as this bazaar.This annual bazaar is held at Isleworth & Syon School Ridgeway Road Isleworth TW7 5LJ at 1.00pm on Saturday 12th November 2016Collections of donations will be sorted the week before on Saturday 5th November, at the HQ - if you have items suitable for donation please drop them off in the morning from 9.30am.  Everyone will be donating their time as volunteers and there will be many people from the local community helping out with the collecting, sorting, at the bazaar and afterwards to tidy up.On the list of wanted items are the followingJewellery;  books;  bric a brac;  childrens, mens and ladies jumble;  hats;  bags and belts;  shoes;  household goods;  small electrical items;  white elephant items;  toys;  fancy goods;  furniture (small items only).  There is also a raffle and a tombola stall.They cannot accept 3 piece suites or fridges/freezers.Come along on the day and bag a bargain!  :-)

Fly-tipping

I have just lodged a Freedom of Information request with the Council for  information by month this year (January 2016 to July 2016) on 1. Number of complaints about  fly-tipping 2. Number of actual call outs to deal with flytipping 3. Number of prosecutions for fly-tipping 4. Number of complaints about rubbish collection I confidently anticipate either a claim that these statistics aren't collected or a demand for money to provide them. Could I ask anyone interested to lodge the same request,to put the pressure on a bit? Form available at https://www.ealing.gov.uk/downloads/download/683/request_for_access_to_information. South Ealing Road - waste ground

My daily walk from St Mary's end of South Ealing Road to Brentford Rail Stn has really intrigued me as regards human behaviours when it comes to the waste they produce....my "favourites" are....1. "The unofficial dump". This is the car parking spaces next to Rose's Hair & Beauty (who must be fed up with it as they must have spent a fortune on their fit out). Every week it is a complete dump then some poor sod clears it up and then it becomes a dump again -it has been repeated every week for 2 or 3 months now.  I wonder if this justified as it is keeping someone in employment? 2. "The litter bin or authorised black bag drop off point" It would appear every litter bin is now a designated point for dropping black bags for both residents and businesses any time of the day of the week. Many businesses are clearly using this scheme or the variant of ramming their rubbish in the bin itself. Ingenious. 3. "If I dump this in front of a charity shop my conscience is clear". All those well known items eg a pee stained mattress, one shoe, and bookcase with no shelves. I think this is called altruism? The foxes have already taken hold but just wonder how long before the rats make an appearance. I hear they can be as big as a cat but I have never seen one but hey shouldn't be long. Makes you proud to live in Ealing.

Heathrow 3rd Runway

London has five airports so why keep enlarging Heathrow - it's all about money! it makes no sense environmentally - Stansted is in a non built up area and has great public transport and road links to the centre of London. Obviously the political pigs have their noses in the trough at Heathrow, Virendra Sharma MP should resign his seat the way he has done an about turn.

Local laundrettes

Do these still exist?  I remember there being one on South Ealing Roadabout opposite the Morgan garage. You could also get your duvets washed at the Dry Cleaners near Butlers on St Mary's Road.

Free Halloween Pumpkin Trail - Northfield Allotments - Saturday 29th

Northfield Allotments, in Northfield Avenue Ealing, is opening its gates for its first Autumn Open Day on Saturday 29th October from 3.30 to 7.30. We’ll be celebrating Halloween with a pumpkin trail around the allotments. There will be our usual delicious home made cakes, but, to warm you up, there will also be a BBQ, hot soup and mulled wine. We’ll be running a raffle and tombola - with apple bobbing and toffee apples for the sweet toothed.We would love it if you come dressed for halloween to help us make the allotments at twilight look spooky. Garden Waste Collection

Has anyone else had a problem with the Garden Waste collection. It has been a month since my Garden Waste wheelie bin has been emptied.  I reported a missed collection twice online. I also telephoned Ealing Council hoping to speak to someone directly but unfortunately it was all automated telephone system.. I today posted a written request for my Garden Waste bin to be emptied. As this is a paid for service on top of our council tax you can imagine I small not too pleased with the service we receive from the contractors of our refuse and recycling.
