At least the black hole is only £22bn now. Quite an achievement for the useless Tories to get it down by more from £46bn.The ‘Red Tories’ are just as untrustworthy as their blue counterparts, who at least have the excuse of being nominally right wing and in favour of less government intervention.Starmer was so desperate to get into No.10 he promised everything to everyone. There was an interesting discussion about this on Newsnight a couple of days ago, basically highlighting how morally bankrupt our political class is and why nobody trusts them anymore.Of course there’s the usual claptrap about the state of the economy from Labour but countries really aren’t run like households, despite what media types like to portray. Governments have access to all sorts of funding sources including borrowing and, of course, taxation as a basis of revenue raising. Scrapping the winter fuel allowance won’t save much in the grand scheme of things but it will destroy trust in Labour among older voters who might have thought Starmer was a good choice.What we will see over the next few years is an exodus of wealth as the very rich simply find more ways to move money offshore. They don’t worry about fuel allowances and the like.

There are many pensioners who will feel this harshly,the ones who don't quite qualify for benefits but who rely upon some help to get them over winter,when fuel prices are due to rise again.The millions of pensioners who qualify but don't apply for benefits may now start to reconsider and put themselves forward for them,costing the treasury much,much more whilst destroying faith in Labour amongst many.

With a growing elderly population (although in more recent years not as much) and Govts for so long scared to increase the pension age in case of becoming unpopular those payments required of them and that people talk about as having 'worked all my life for' aren't actually enough to comfortably keep them in old age. There is Pension Credit out there and there are a lot of people who aren't claiming the benefits that they could do now and are entitled to. There is a lot of fearmongering about people who claim and shouldn't be but they will be small in comparison. I noticed recently that there are some eye problems that have now been added to the list that can entitle you to benefit. If you know anyone that this applies to do tell them as the money should help them to get to their appointments.There are a lot of things which contribute to dementia and you may not be aware that this includes poor eyesight and poor hearing. So make sure that you keep up to date with appointments and try end encourage others to do so as well.Staving off dementia as long as you can just has to be worthwhile!

People like Philippa Bond always like making excuses for the Facilitators of Baby P's Murder Party, aka the Labour Party. Labour are a party of top dog managers, that are good at being disingenuous and at virtue signalling. If they had all the money in the world, they would still spend it on their own selves first, it seems. As soon as they get into office at national level, it stops fuel payments for many of the pensioners. Any savings from these cuts will undoubtedly will go on pay rises for Labour's own client group - the public sector workers. That probably will include Ealing Council's Democratic Services Department. It has just given the striking junior doctors from the Bumfluff Medical Association a 22 percent pay award. The people have to serve the paternal neo feudal top dog virtue signalling managers of Labour, inorder to "protect public services", not the other way round. Labour, the Facilitators of Baby P's Murder Party will keep the bureaucratic gravy train rolling at the expense of the People.

It just shows how important it is to look at insulation and ventilation of buildings. Right now the problem in many people's minds is heat with many buildings with windows that can't be opened or you can't get any cross ventilation to cool - so rather than it being fuel being used to keep warm it is fuel being used to cool.I've managed to dry clothes on a line outside recently without any worry which is good. And we've opened our LOCKED sash windows as per the Imperial College and Cambridge University recommendation of a little top and bottom to let hot air out the top and cool air in the bottom. A cold hot water bottle is also good on hot evenings and making sure the bedroom had cooled before you go to bed!There always seem to be improvements that can be made. (I'd love the fanlight to open too and maybe have a grille.) The less spent on energy now the more prepared we may be for when it is cold.Change can mean rearranging.

Wow, really off on a tangent. It’s summertime now, so not cold even if it has been wet. Trying to keep cool isn’t the thread here.The winter fuel payment is for the, er, winter, when people tend to pit their heating on to try to stay warm. That’s the general idea. Nothing to do with ‘rearranging’ unless you suggest that all those pensioners splash out on expensive retrofitting their homes. Many older people already adjust their lifestyles to reduce expenditure on heating, but it is old in the UK in winter.So you think the changes in winter fuel allowss as necessary are okay then Philippa, since you are not arguing against it.

It isn't means tested and I bet it is those who don't need it for keeping warm who are making the most fuss. Those who really do wouldn't. That is why you should be helping people not claiming Pension Credit who need it to do so. Unfortunately for your theory Philippa, the ones who most need it are usually the ones who will suffer the most. My own in laws in the High Peak of Derbyshire who get snowed in most winters are just over the PC bar.Ironically the PC folk are better off than most of us what with the freebies starting with the Council Tax- nigh on £2,000 for many of us. To say nothing of free rent, free dentist( if you can find one) and many other freebies.I wonder if those who voted for Sir Kneeler are quite so keen now.

It is not as tunnel-visioned as that.Unfortunately the balance has not been right. Money is moved around by Govts from one use to another - and is not all ring-fenced as you'd like to think. Govts are petrified of losing power and so try and butter up whoever they think may give them votes and their behaviour to scupper any other Govts and promises to all and sundry make for a more complicated scenario. They also have to take care of the safety and security and the position of the country in the wider world as well.The money you will have been paying in will be paying for the generation before you but yes, should entitle you to something when your time comes - and for many because of the shortfall and because many in generations before have lived longer the pension age has been increased - uncomfortable for a Govt to do because unpopular - some may never live to collect any. The generation following you has to pay for you! So we need taxpaying youngsters to follow us and we need to pay our share of taxes and more should be done to ensure that changes are made to reduce the number of those who evade and avoid paying their share. Our use of public services goes up and down during our lives and most of us hope that we won't need to use them much at all once we have finished our education and are earning to pay our way and save.It's worrying that there is so little social care available to help us in our old age when we are unable to do things for ourselves because we prefer not to think about it. You don't see it until you approach it and see the problems the generation above have. How can that best be planned?With long waiting lists for treatment many have been unable to work and live as fit a life as they could have done. It's better to try and stay fit and active for as long as possible so the NHS spends more time treating people for problems they have that they aren't at fault for causing! BTW Attendance Allowance has changed and other ailments have been added which can make you eligible including regarding eyesight. There are lots of new reports on how poor eyesight can lead to dementia but then so can poor hearing. Multi-sensory understanding of what is going on in the world around you is important. Well we had a discussion on those particular houses when I posted an article on them winning the Stirling Prize about five years ago. You can obviously house more people in towers. Many of our homes are underinhabited and inflexible. We need green spaces too. The Local Plan has to be approved by the Govt. Since "affordable" housing isn't affordable by most and there are still thousands of homes both needing remedial work since Grenfell revelations and problems still with leaseholds and absent and inattentive landlords and now difficulty in finding experienced builders the housing crisis remains.

How on earth would I know what the answer is to all your imaginings and suppositions?What is important is that those who will no longer get this money have already done something about or will try and do something about preparing for a possible increase in their need for heating this winter. For some that could be by making more of an effort to reduce energy use now while you can without causing too much stress. My effort has been to hang as much washing as possible on the line in the garden instead of using a tumble dryer. However I appreciate this is not available to everyone.If you insist on being insulting I can't imagine that anybody in the Labour party will be answering your questions but if you are really serious I'm surprised you still try to get answers from here.

A good decision. Means testing is a sensible approach. Many not poor pensioner friends of mine consistently gave the money to charity. Changing one's mind is a normal human trait. Governments have to prioritise in real time especially when £millions are involved. It's early days to demonise a Government which has only been in power for 6 weeks. BTW I'm not a member of the Labour Party - or any political Party as it happens.

The real problem with that is thousands of the people who exist on the cusp of meeting the criteria and who just miss out,will no longer be able to turn up their boiler a notch or two in December and January when it is coldest.It will hurt the 'nearly poor',so to speak,most of all.It will likely cost government twice as much as they save,with new claimants for qualifying benefits,hospital admissions and gp appointments.Many very elderly pensioners feel stigmatised by the means test and have bad memories of it from the 40's and 50's.Labour will likely lose supporters too.

But the winter fuel payment doesn't actually end fuel poverty and there may be better ways of doing that. The handout to so many people who may not need it would obviously be better spent on those that really do and on long lasting home improvements like insulation and double glazing. It is amazing how many homes still don't have double glazing and will have been suffering from excessive heat through the windows in the recent heatwave. Where is the help on this? The energy companies have been supposed to be helping their needy customers out. How is that going?

Just seen on the news that Reeves is now encouraging the estimated 800k people who are entitled to pension credits but who are not claiming it,to do so.This will mean not only will they receive more in benefit payments,but will also qualify for the winter fuel payment.If this will not cost way more than what is being spent on the winter payment,I will eat my hat.I fail to see what this policy will achieve.

Hopefully it will mean that more people who need extra help will actually claim the benefits to which they are entitled, and those who don't need it won't get it.All benefits and entitlements to benefits change from time to time and so need to be checked. There was something about Attendance Allowance and the different sorts of eye problems that now entitle you to claim for it - and you don't need to have a carer.
