Bestest cocktails ?

Which pub/wine bar/restaurant in Ealing makes the best cocktails? What's your favourite cocktail? How did 'cocktail' get its name? And what's the thinking in having a 'DellBoy' umbrella in the glass - why an umbrella?  ;-)

Gerry,apparently the bar in the new Moran Hotel in Chiswick specialises in cocktails - it has even created a new one, the Chiswick Cosmopolitan, which the reviewer on ChiswickW4.com seemed to enjoy greatly.

Worst of the Century:Brain Hemorrhage1 1/2 oz. Peach Schnapps1/4 oz. of Baileys Irish CreamSplash of grenadine syrupPour into a shooter glass. Slowly pour Irish Cream into Schnapps so that it forms a "brain" in "formaldehyde." Dribble the grenadine (dribbling onto a spoon then into the Schnapps helps) directly into the center of the Irish Cream mass. As the grenadine amount slowly increases it will eventually burst through the Irish Cream creating a brain hemorrhage.

When Fanny Trollope - mother of the more famous Anthony - went to the States in 1827, she discovered the strange Yankee habit of mixing cock-tails. And then she wrote about them in her "Domestic Manners of the Americans", published 1832, which is an excellent early travelogue. Caused quite a furore in its day though.Some sources say she invented the term but I think that is unproven.

Yes - never seemed to cause much hilarity thoughCan you imagine calling anyone Fanny nowadays - even assuming you didn't know she'd marry a Mr Trollope.When we wanted to name our then infant daughter after her great-grandmothers, Rachel was easy as a start but my husband's grandma Fanny more of a problem...luckily her petname was Fonya which is altogether more acceptable

I have a liking for Victorian names - Fanny's a delightful name, as are Bert, Teddy, Harry, Jack and Fred. Best of all I love biblical names - Rachel, Ruth, Daniel, Sarah and the like. Can't stand some modern ones like Chardonnay, Kimberly, Darryl and Condoleeza!Speaking of names, I do like most of the ones given to cocktails. So creative and unusual, don't you think?  ;-)

Am with you on biblical - I chose Rachel and Jonathan Joseph - named for my grandfather - but not Victorian: Doris, Mavis, Winifred, Ethel, Gertrude...funny the girls are worse than the boys. And it's not association either: both Aunt Ethel and Auntie Gertie were strong, interesting women.

Just got back from a fabulous long weekend in Gibraltar and while there I logged on to Ealing Today to retrieve the Brain Hemorrhage cocktail that I posted before.The cocktail waiter was most accommodating in making it and I think it left a lasting impression on him!
