Ealing Broadway pound shop

Further to previous on this, and the evident dismay of some of our disassembled company at its very existence:-Having run out of 100 lightbulbs, yesterday went to the local Wickes South Ealing (in the lamented absence of the longstanding Mo's Enterprise electrical shop across the road, now being converted to yet another Polish foodshop/'delicatessen'). Did this large Wickes store have in stock 100w bulbs with the bayonet fitting most of us still use? -  is the Pope a Moslem?So having to go up the Broadway (a thing I avoid whenever possible)for other purposes, nipped into the aforesaid and much-reviled Pound Shop, and no trouble getting a 4-pack of requisite 100w bayonet bulbs at the princely price of   -  you're there before me. Long may it reign.

I could always get obscure little items from that wonderful shop - y'know, a battery for an antediluvian BT 'phone system and sundry out-of-date gismos, which other shops wouldn't bother to stock - and they were such nice people who ran the business - yeh, who needs pumpernickel or sweet pickled herrings that often?  Sad news.  :-(

The family decided they'd had enough and wanted to pack it in. Biz still seemed to be buoyant so far as I could see.

Does anyone remember the predecessor of Mo's Enterprise? It was a joke shop when I was a child...you know, itching powder etc !! I used to love it.

Chris, I was gobsmacked at your quest for 100w light bulbs.Do you live in a baronial hall? Or a lighthouse, perhaps?I can understand a Yorkshireman buying 40w bulbs, and possibly 60w for Christmas. But 100w. They must have been a present for someone.Or do we fear the worst and you are softening to our southern profligacy? Whatever the reason, the very best of seasonal greetings.

Some snobs don't like the idea of pound shops in Ealing. There's a place for them - I too like a bargain.

I should make sure you have a large stock of 100watt bulbs Chris, as in the not too distant future you will not be able to get anything but Energy Savers(?)as ordered by the Eco Fascists in the EU.

Oh dear.I was in Sainsbury's West Ealing emporium last week, obviously looking for bargains coz Waitrose is nearer home, when what did I see?A stack of Philips energy saving light bulbs at, wait for it, three bulbs for £1! Astounded by this offer, which for an individual in a £1 shop* would have cost me £1 each. I purchased three.* Real bargain hunters in Ealing would of course go to the 97p shop in Greenford!

In my experience of £1 shops and the like in Ealing I would suggest that most of the customers of those emporia do not have recognizable English surnames...

I have just returned ( Sunday, 13:00) from WE Sainsbury.They still have a large number of 3 for a £1 low energy light bulbs - 60w equivalent. They are situated between the two southernmost checkouts, i, the end furthest from the kiosk and x items or less* checkouts.* does anyone know where Sainsbury keep their less? And what is it? The staff don't seem to know.

Presume the low intensity 60w would have to last twice as long as a 100w bayonet to make a reasonable comparison?

Thre is a smashing little electrical shop in Bond Street in Ealing - they seem to stock everything you can't find anywhere else.

Good old City Radio. Long may they last!One thing they do have in abundance is knowledge.Remember Kay's on the other side of Bond Street? Good for tools, especially of the automotive variety.And Shellshears - architectural fittings (door handles, locks, and much else) in the Mall.Clay Brothers for ironmongery. Stockwell's for chemical apparatus, and medicines.We don't even have a proper library at the moment.

There was a splendid architecural fittings shop in The Mall(opp NatWest bank) called Sellars, now long gone sadly.  Wasn't Shellshears a sports shop and in West Ealing?
