The Jason Stacey council is to be commended for conserving part of our local culture by refurbishing several hundred cast-iron posts which the previous council had arranged to junk and replace with short-life pressed steel hockey sticks. This means that the far longer life expectancy of the cast-iron will more than repay the additional expenditure. The core area of Northfields and South Ealing retained over five hundred posts although attrition of stock and contraction of area, which has been continual for fifty years, meant some outlying Ealing and Hanwell roads received new heritage or hockey depending upon area. The swan necks and tear-drop lamps are elegant and complement the lampposts admirably!PS Thanks to all who lobbied for or enabled this programme including a Greenford councillor, Will Brooks, council officers, many individual residents and the Save Ealing Lampposts. The SEAL committee of five, later expanded to eight, worked very hard when all seemed lost and I mention Eric Leach, because he is standing as an independent councillor, and Mark Kehoe who is an authority on street lighting.
