TV COMPANY LOOKING FOR SUSAN GRIMES

Does anyone know Susan Grimes - a Coston Junior School pupil in Greenford and winner of a National Cycling Proficiency Award in 1963?We are making a documentary for ITV taking a celebratory look at the massive impact that the Duke of Edinburgh has had on ordinary individuals up and down the country. This is a follow-up to a similar documentary made for the Jubilee celebrations - 'The Queen & I'.  We are looking for anecdotes, unexpected stories and an inspiring personal sense of how Prince Philip may have affected a particular individual.In 1963 the Duke of Edinburgh visited the White City stadium to attend a National Cycling Proficiency event where he presented a prize to a young lady, Susan Grimes, from Coston Junior School in Greenford.This was filmed by a Pathé news crew. What cuts to government departments are we going to have next Wednesday?  What cuts should Mr Osbourne make?  What cuts do we deserve?Personally, I'd love to see drastic cuts in overseas aid to so-called developing countries.  Anyone agree?

Best Sunday carvery in Ealing?

Which pub or restaurant in Ealing offers the best carvery on a Sunday? One with really tender roast beef and crispy Yorkshire puds, tasty roast pork 'n crackling with lots of red-currant jelly, lovely new season lamb with mint sauce and new potatoes or slices of succulent roast chicken and stoffing? Followed by dollops of spotty-dick and custard pudding?I fancy some comfort food this weekend.

Hanwell Community Forum v Ealing Council

Reading that Hanwell Community Forum (HCF)HCF is threatening to take the council to court because they want to give QPR the go ahead for the redevelopment of Warren Farm is appalling. HCF only has a core group of a dozen or so people and the three meetings that I have attended over the last four years has never seen more than fifteen people present. The last meeting I went to had eight people, so for HCF to claim that she is representing the interests of ALL Hanwellians is simply not correct.Warren Farm will be open to everybody. The facilities will be massively improved from pitches to showers. I would suspect that QPR are likely to put on training sessions for the local community. I also noticed in yesterday's Evening Standard that Notting Hill Home Ownership describes one of the attractions for the new development "The Boatyard" as "Warren Farm which has a very large sports ground with football and cricket pitches". It would be a fantasy to claim that I am a QPR fan. Many more people would use Warren Farm if it was properly maintained. HCF has not done any consultation with local residents so to claim that the council is relegating residents green spaces is sheer utter tosh.Questions I would like answered are:If HCF proceeds with legal action who is going to foot the bill for HCF to take the council to court? How many people agree with HCF for them to proceed with legal action?Are those signatories freely available? Can those signatures be audited? Have they consulted all local residents to claim representation before taking the case to court? If not, why not?How many Hanwell residents are needed for HCF to claim that they are representing the interests of the majority of residents?How long will the plans be suspended if HCF takes the council to court?One example of the dicatorship of HCF is the redevelopment of the Uxbridge Road through Hanwell. I discovered that HCF wanted the improvements to match their own self interest and not those who also live in Hanwell. I spoke to the Chair, Carolyn Brown, at one of the consultations, who disagreed with the plans despite having significant benefits for cyclists.  Carolyn and HCF has done a huge amount of good for Hanwell, but that does not give her (or them) the power take the council to court on under the guise of representating Hanwell residents.

Cinema club at old Northfield Ave cinema?

For years I have wondered at the possibility of the old Odeon cinema on Northfield Ave re-opening up as cinema, particularly during the absence of a cinema in Ealing. I know this is highly unlikely but think that there may be some mileage in a cinema club opening (subject to permission from the Elim church). My thoughts are that it would perhaps show a film once or twice a month and show a kids film on Saturday morning and maybe an independent type film some other evening. The idea is to do something different from the Classic cinema club at the Town hall which has a very specific market. i would suggest that the beauty of this idea is that we have a dedicated resource on our doorstep that is not being fully utilised. The Elim church can benefit from the takings and perhaps more importantly reach out to the local community and perhaps sow the seeds for a few new recruits.I just wondered if there is anything in this idea - your thoughts?

Will the last person...please turn out the lights?

Why is it that the problem of the lights being left on at the council offices requires a massive upgrade to save £192,592?http://www.ealingtoday.co.uk/default.asp?section=info&link=http://nnet-server.com/server/common/eaealinglights001.htmSurely all that needs to happen is that the last person working in any given area / floor simply throws a couple of switches?When I was a young lad my dad soon taught me not to leave lights on in the house.  Did nobody else get that valuable training?Why does this simple discipline not extend to people working in offices?(I suppose if you're not paying the bill you don't care do you...)Most larger organisations used to have night-time security at one time and a part of the job was to go around and turn out all the lights after hours.  Does Ealing council not have an overnight security presence in Percival House?Anybody know how much this upgrade is going to cost?I bet it is a helluva a lot more than £192,000!!!S'funny really, because, as an electronic engineer with a keen interest in renewables and efficiency, I am 100% behind sensible control systems to manage this kind of thing but what I can't abide is waste at the council.  This kind of system should have been installed from the absolute outset at Percival House at the very least - not retrofitted at vast expense decades later.

Amazing sight in M&S.

We joined a queue at the M&S pay-out tills and in front of us were a couple with bright red and yellow hairstyles and they had many metal rings and small silver studs punctured through their noses, ears and face and scalps - at least a couple of dozen each. Goodness knows how many more they had on their bodies, which were covered in tattoos, mainly in dark blue and black and some bright colours! I was amazed and embarrassed - didn't know where to look. They were completely casual about their display.  Its a strange world methinks.

Bravo GPs

On Friday I drove to a NHS "walk-in" centre in Hounslow. I had problems hearing due to wax. I'd used them before. Paid my £2.00 parking only to be told that this facility closed 18 months ago and go to an "urgent care centre". Off I drove to my nearest UGC and was told they don't do ear wax. I was then told to go to my GP. I usually have to wait six days for a nurse but found a slot Monday morning and booked it on the internet. The nurses and doctors in my surgery are great. Hunt I understand tries to blame them for the problems in A&E with long waiting times but if you close A&Es what do you expect.As we approach the 65th birthday of the NHS let's celebrate our GPs their surgery,nurses and receptionists. Now the wax has gone I won't hear a rude word said against them and certainly not from J Hunt MP.
