I understand that the store which will replace Beales has been reported in a recent Ealing Gazette?What will the new store be?My apologise if this has been recently covered in this forum!!

I think it's the end of October but when I went in there a few weeks ago, they had a load of rubbish for sale and all the good stuff was still full price, ready to go to one of their other stores I suppose. Can't see then lastiung another month or so.

So, it's going to be PRIMARK. I must confess I'd never heard of them before, but from the excellent piece by Ms.Canniff on the front page, it sounds just the sort of thing required to replace the old fashioned and slightly pricey Beales. Good luck to PRIMARK.

Perhaps it's not so great if you ask yourself HOW do they make their clothes so cheap??  Although, I am not saying Primark does, but you may want to take a look at a documentary on soon (not sure the date) regarding child slave labour in India or look at GAP who have done.According to one estimate, more than 20 per cent of India's economy is dependent on children, the equivalent of 55 million youngsters under 14.  They work extremely long hours in sweatshops, under poor working conditions and often against their will.I am not criticising you personally, but we all should think twice before we buy CHEAP clothes and try to find out who these big name stores actually use to make their clothes and under what conditions.Just my opinion!

I guess Lesley that most clothing is made in the Far East these days. China, Malasia, India. Our own indiginous Textile Industry has long since ceased to be a major force. If we boycott all such goods from these places, you are likely to hurt the very people that you want to help. Certainly whats left of our textile industry could not make up this shortfall, but what it did produce would be out of reach of the very poor in this Country. Gradually I suppose as the living standards in the Far East rise, then economics might dictate a return to goods produced nearer to home.It may be also, that transport costs may eventually dictate that outcome.

But Primark must be paying rock-bottom wages, given what they charge...so by buying there, aren't we endorsing exploitation? I think I'd rather buy at places where there is a chance of reasonable corporate social responsibility at least: Marks and John Lewis for example - even if it costs me a bit more.

It's taken a very long time to open this store, hasn't it? Primark is hardly know for its swich shops and Beales was in resonable nick when it closed. Wonder what they're doing in there !!

I'm not a big Primark shopper but the few things I've bought recently have got labels that state they are made in Spain.
