Crime figure reduction in Ealing

Its is nice to see that the crime figures have reduced in Ealing, it is such a pity that this does not seem to extend to the outer areas of the borough such as Southall and Northolt, where crime seems as active as ever. So yes I am being sceptical of this paper reduction.

I'm glad things are rosy for Ealing but am also concerned about less fortunate parts of the borough. Greenford has become such a dangerous place in recent months with gangs of teenage boys (and girls) robbing and assaulting innocent school kids on the streets and buses as they journey to and from school. The police are trying to crack down on it but it has become so prevalent that many of the victims now see it as an inevitable sign of the times that must be expected and put up with. Many don't even report incidents anymore. We seem to be living in the midst of a culture of violence that originated elsewhere in the world and which we seem to have imported. Our kids now live in terror of knife attacks as they try to go about their daily lives. It seems sad but its probably time to get out of Greenford!

Yes i did. Edinburgh certainly seems inviting. Ealing just does not seem a safe and healthy place to raise a family anymore! From our streets to our shopping centres, parks and public transport, Ealing has lately become very dangerous for our kids.

Crime figures depends on reported crime and detection rates as far as I'm aware. Please correct me if I am wrong.Also being a sceptic - wouldn't crime figures go down in preportion to how many people felt it worth reporting it ?

Only a small per centage of crime is reported as most people feel that it is a lot of hassle for nothing.  The Police rarely follow up the reported crime and it just becomes part of an unreliable statistic.  The more this happens, the less people bother to report crime so obviously the worse the crime rate is, the better the statistics look!When I was young (in Surrey) my brother's bicycle was stolen.  The 'bobby' came to our house, took the details and came back one and a half hours later with the bicycle.  The culprit got a clip round the ear and everyone was better off!    Oh -If only those days could return.

Cathy & Melissa, I`m wondering if you are accessing individual ward figures, if so would appreciate the link.Thats not to say that I don`t recognise you may well be in tune with localised problems.The publicity of improved figures often relates to a specific crime, such as the good reduction in robbery for September, but rape and sexual offences, burglary and gun crime are up. Murders (2) constant.Comparative figures are also misleading when we would all be relieved if actual crime would simply fall to say 10 years ago let alone 15, 20, 25 ago.

Robert, I'm not accessing any ward figures so can't provide a link. i'm talking about personal experience as acquired as a parent of two teenage boys and one teenage girl - all of whom regularly tell me about incidents of bullying and attempted mugging that have happened to themselves, their friends or other kids they know. It has become rife in recent years. are you a parent of teenagers who use public transport? if so, you'd probably know what i mean. Several parents have told me they intend to take their kids out of Greenford schools and send them to 6th forms in schools/colleges outside Greenford because they feel Greenford is particularly bad and worse than other areas.

Melissa is absolutely right. Any parent with teenage children will understand and know that muggings amongst teenagers (particularly boys) is rife. As far as I am aware, the figures on crimes committed on children under the age of 16 is not reported in official figures. If they were we would all see the true picture.

The big difference is that any one of the many minor incidents can turn into a tragedy unthought of years ago, and its a continual worry particularly for parents.I think many politicians have been indifferent to the  stability of the native population which was largely self-policing. The police have also become reactive and the lack of uniforms is immediately noticeable after a trip abroad.On an upbeat note, the SNT Safer Neighbourhood Teams have been formed to match electoral wards and each should have a serjeant with PC`s & PCSO`s. If you look up www.met.police.uk/saferneighbourhoods you can note the name of your serjeant and mobile and landline phone numbers and keep them handy so that you can get local help.

Good idea Robert, about the recent Safer neighbourhood Schemes. Our SN Team in Walpole Ward, headed by the excellent Sgt. Pinder Chana and his team are most efficient and very reassuring - so pleased they're around our locality.

Offenders who have no fear of the law will have no reason to stop committing crimes.Criminals are not living in fear of authority but we have to live with the knowledge that in a number of cases they just laugh at the law and get away with it.Until there is a justice system which names, shames and punishes offenders how can the situation inprove?Highlighted recently on the Forun was the incident where a lady was mugged in North Acton but most people ignored her cries for help. Fortunately a very kind couple came to her aid but nowadays, many people just walk on by, possibly for fear of being attacked or finding themselves on the wrong side of the law for hurting the muggers!The Police are no doubt doing their best but it is difficult when their hands are tied up with red tape!Jean
