Toshiba and Hitachi spring to mind, but there are a few important things to check out.... The viewing angle, that is,how far apart two people can sit and still see a bright picture,it varies a lot and doesn't have much to do with cost. The response time of the screen,if the Tiller Girls were doing their thing, kicking their legs in the air, then you'd expect them to only have two legs each, some old tech. LCDs can give the effect of having four legs each (like strobing). So if you go and check TVs out, look for fast action..sport etc. Does the ball blur? Is it 100% HD ready, not all are? Ask the shop assistant several times? It'd be nice if it has Freeview built in,if you're planning to keep this one for another 30 years then you'll need it,analogue TV is stopping in the not too distant future,(it already has in Whitehaven Cumbria). You mentioned sound, that's important too...if the ones you are considering have Freeview, then compare the sounds using Radio 3,that should show up any problems in that area.Depending on the cost of the "Extra Insurance" that they always try to sell these days, then LCD TVs are probably the only appliance that it's really worth taking out on. The light behind the screen can burn out and is costly to replace,as I found out. That's about it,oh and you should read the reviews on any that are in with a chance,on the web.
