Anyone else on it? Why is it so enthused about?

If you saw Watchdog last night you'd think twice about joining. Items such as date of birth, profession, place of residence is great to conmen who then use the information to raid online bank accounts. They demonstrated how easy it was to do this.

I am on it (down to purely not wanting to feel left out!) i do find all the pokes, fun walls, fish, drinks etc etc ad nauseum v v irritating. Oh dear I am turning into to grumpy old women

I'm a Facebook fan.  You don't have to put lots of personal information if you don't want to. Most people's profile is only visible to their friends, and you can be totally invisible with a profile that doesn't show in a search if you want too so only people you contact know you are there. Really, like so many other things, it's only as dangerous as the user makes it.I have lots of friends in different places, and like using the computer so I find it a very convenient way to keep track of them.  Anyway it's just fun! (Not all the stupid applications though, which are just annoying).

It is amazing how all the kids who have gone off to uni are in touch with each other because they are on it.  Also the way that they manage to catch up with schoolfriends who they haven't seen since primary school etc.  Very different from when I was that age.

I am on Facebook too, partly because I moved to this area in January and I still don´t know anyone here! I find it enterntaining, another way of communicating amongst people - but not a valid one if you don´t get to meet with the people on there from time to time.

I get to meet most of the people I know on Facebook on a regular basis, but then I knew them already. I think that's what is supposed to happen.

Most of my friends on Facebook I see at least weekly.  Many of them more often than that.  We use Facebook for arranging things and sharing photos mostly - also for just poking each other and saying 'hi i'm still here' or 'I feel a bit low give me a virtual hug' on the days inbetween seeing each other. The others are people too far away to see regularly but as I'm not good at phoning or writing this is a brilliantly easy way to keep in touch with each others lives and families.I have a few FB friends I don't know so well - they are people I would like to know better when the occassion arises!

I love it though it's a terrible time-waster. i use it to keep in touch with daughter on gap year - she checks that even when she doesn't look at her emails. Also I see what some of her friends and my cousin's kids are up to. Mostly don't bother with applications but quite like the book one and have a serious addiction to the never-ending movie quiz.

Some people find it too comfy not to go out and meet the people they poke all the time! LoL I just thought it might be easier to meet people in Ealing using Facebook.

I liked it in moderation and without personal details. You don't have to give your details to register. You also can and should set up your privacy details available on the site (it is called privacy) and then you restrict the access to the public to your personal details.You also should not "add" as a friend any strangers.

There are neighbourhood groups on facebook- but Acton only has five members...maybe Ealing is better

The Ealing group has 646 members and Hanwell,not suprisingly as it is lovely (not that I'm biased or anything) has 636. I wonder why Acton only has 5???

Perhaps if more information was available about these neighbourhood groups they would easily attract members.For instance, how did they start,where do they meet, how often, what do they do and so on!London can be a very lonely place for some people and newcomers to an area must feel left out!Jean

They don't meet at all - they are purely virtual. They are quite fun for getting to know the area better though.I've just checked them both - mysteriously Ealing now has 650 members and Hanwell 666,  spooky but true!

Having seen Graham's thread the other day..I joined/registeredFacebook and have done nothing more..or achieved nothing more...so far.I'm even stumped at searching for my local Group for example...or Ealings or Hanwells.It says "Search Group".  So I've typed in a town name..but I cannot find the Go button to expidite the search.!I must be blind/doppy! Help.Is there an instruction page on the website for doppies?

My kids feel very strongly,that no-one over the age of about 25 should sign up to facebook. They say that the presence of those of us north of 50 is debasing a yoof culture site and they will have to find another one.And they won't be my fwends so I am bereft.

My children have just had to get over it.  I'm even in my son's Top Friends! (I suppose he just knows which side his bread's buttered).  Maybe it feels less odd to them as they are in their mid-twenties and we have many mutual friends.

Hi GrahamOn Facebook, as your Name in the Index is shown in blue text..it means that any member of Facebook..can enter your secret,semi-secret world.  I mean I have just joined supplying the minimum of information..and yet I'm able to browse all sites where the PRIVACY levels are low.There are some 500 "Ealing" Groups. Which one were you trying to access?
