Making London better and safer to cycle in...

The Big Ride, on Saturday 28 April, is a fun event with a serious message calling on London's mayoral candidates to make the capital's streets as safe and inviting for cycling as they are in Holland.10,000 (yes, ten thousand) cyclists are expected. Cycling through closed roads from Speaker's Corner to the Victoria Embankment it is not a protest or a demonstration, but an event that is going to be great fun.Ealing Cycling Campaign will be leading two feeder rides from The Town Hall to the event. Both rides will be marshalled.The first ride departs at 9.00am. This is a slow ride using less busy roads and cycle paths. Great for families and less confident cyclists, but at a nice gentle pace for all, it uses streets that you may have never used! The second ride departs at 10.00am. Slightly quicker, because it is a shorter route, the marshalled ride will head straight down the Uxbridge Road and up Holland Park Avenue. If you are planning to be on this ride, you should be comfortable cycling in traffic.The event is a turn up and go. Bring your friends. It is free too.

The Pavement Vandals of South Ealing

Beautiful new pavements in South Ealing, beautiful new street benches. You would think all the local businesses woulf be pleased. Well, not Barclays Bank whose store sign contractor Butterfield Signs decided to mount the brand new pavement that had been there for less than a week in a heavy white van (H19 BSL) at 20:20 last night abd spend a few hours putting up new signage on the front of the ban. Blockng the pavement to pedestrians and oblivious to the fact that it just this driving and mounting the pavement with large trucks is what cumulatively destroys them and makes them dangerous to pedestrians over time. The irony behind this is that there is large private car park serving Barclays Bank and the other shops in the parade behind them with an access road off Airedale Road. What is more the side roads are all free parking at that hour.(Editor: I have e-mailed you some photos of this piece of civic duty and care for others to you. Is the PM a Conservative?

A little article in yesterday's paper reads:Actress Helena Bonham Carter - the bohemian great grandaughter of Liberal PM Herbert Asquith - will chill the Tory right with this verdict on her friend David Cameron. 'He's not that Conservative, actually' says Helen. I mean he's not a right-wing person. If he was in America, he'd probably be a Democrat. And he's got a hilarious sence of humour.' With the way the Coalition is going, he will need it.Makes one wonder!!!

Westlea Road, off Boston Road, Hanwell W7 2AD".This sport is hugely famous in Canada, Czech and Slovak. Our Values are; Respect, Sportsmanship, Considering others, Affordable, Family friendly, Fun.  These values resonate in our both, children's and adult beginners programmes.We are affiliated with UK Dek (Ball) hockey association. & International street/ball hockey association. "One of our Aim is to Celebrates multiculturalism by introducing children (boys/girls age 5-14 year) and adults (male/female) to this fast & active sport which is good for fitness and health.Our Children programme costs £16 per-child for the whole term(9weeks)or £3 per-session.  New term starts on the 21st of April 2012 from 09:45am - 10:45am, Saturday mornings. Recognising truth from rubbish

Are the Ealing Council personnel responsible for administering the Environmental Services Contract clandestine Conservative supporters – why else has Roger Jones (Ealing Council, Director of Environment and Leisure – and the Cabinet empowered supervising officer) allowed this debacle to continue for so long under the Labour government. What controls have Labour put in place to address the core issue, or is it a case of the tail wagging the dog again.Is this politics or incompetence?

Guitar needed urgently

I found a fabulous violin for my youngest via the forum so I thought I would ask if anyone out there has a classical guitar that their child has outgrown and they would be willing to part with. Street cleansing

Judging by the vastly reduced number of posts the collection service seems to be settling down; either that or fingers have worn out from typing and patince has worn out.While the collectors actually picking the rubbish they drop when collecting is good; when, oh when, will many streets see a man (or woman) with a broom again.It's been over two weeks on Boston Road and driving a street sweeper at 10-15+ mph 'somewhere near' the gutters doesn't do anything for the pavements!

Old discs contain sensitive data

The BBC reports that about half of the computer discs bought second hand contained data, and over 1 in 10 carried significant amounts of sensitive personal data. I assume that any old disc will have sectors that contain both clean original data and corrupted data due to a computer crash, so I zero the first few sectors which carry the Master Boot Record and then re-format using software that writes then reads a series of test patterns over the entire disc, overwriting every bit three or four times before leaving the disc clean apart from some new formatting data. It takes time, but all errors are reported. I can supply the free software that I use, together with simple instructions, if anyone wishes to securely wipe a disc before re-use.

Recycling uncollected AGAIN

Around here (around St Mary's / South Ealing) once again the black sacks have been collected on the correct day (Tuesday) during the morning, but NONE of the recycling has been. A fortnight ago the recycling was collected just before dusk and last week it was done during lunchtime by operatives who really were not happy at doing it. This week we seem to be back to what now passes for normal - no recycling collection - and the foxes will have a fine time tonight redistributing everything all over the pavements and gardens.I really believe that the Council has truly fouled up the contract with Enterprise and that in reality they are only supposed to collect the black sacks - witness the lack of proper recycling vehicles and everything being dumped in standard rear platform compacting lorries as previously reported. Indeed on the first week of the new regime operatives collecting black sacks were heard to mutter along the lines of "what are we supposed to do with all this stuff?".This appalling mess has been going on for nearly a month now and it is time questions were asked in high places and for those responsible to be called upon to resign. I have no confidence in the Council's repeated assurances that these are merely teething troubles, nor in the assertions that recycling is not going to landfill. In my view it is time for the "opposition" to call a vote of "No Confidence" in the ruling group and to re-instate the previous contractors - at least then we might return to having a clean and pleasant borough.

Free to any community or voluntary group who can make use of it.I have an HP Deskjet 640c printer.Old but pefectly seviceable and was fully working when I unplugged it this morning. Comes with two unopened orignal ink cartridges.It has both paralell and USB connections.Please drop me an e-mail via EalingToday if you would like it. First e-mail gets it!I really don't want to simply put it out for recycling as it is in full working order.Over to you.
