Underground Station name changes.

I note that TFL and Ken Livingstone are proposing some name changes to Underground Stations. This seems to me to be a good idea in most cases, as the new names relate more closely to their immediate location. Shepherds Bush (MET)becomes Shepherds Bush Market. Edgeware Road becomes Chapel Street, and Aldgate East becomes Brick Lane. Mind you where would it end? After all Acton Town isn't very near to Acton etc.

Good old Ken. Just when he announces cutbacks on the tube (air-con etc) he wants to change station names. How much is this going to cost? Consultant fees and meetings then signage and all those maps on the trains, stations and leaflets. Does it really matter what the station is called - we just want a reliable, safe, bearable journey.

David Archer ● 6877d

Point taken David, good thing this isn't W4, otherwise the pro Ken Trotskyists would have come down on you like a ton of bricks. Well it might not cost too much if they just have a few labels printed to stick over the existing.Or is that too easy?

Colin Vaughan ● 6877d

Ridiculous.........all the cost of tube aps, signs etc.plis all the resulting confusion..what a waste of time and effort. Why can't they just add Aldgate East (for Brick Lane) underneath on the train itself.

Penny Crocker ● 6877d

I'm all for renaming Acton Town to Mill Hill Park, its original name...While they are about it why not South Harrow to Roxeth because that's where it is.

Alan Brainsby ● 6877d

Apparently the big corporates are taking over in Brick lane - forcing the rents up and the Bangla Town restaurants out - 15 closed in the last few months...so if TfL leave it a couple of months, no-one is going to want to go there anyhow.

They changed Enfield West to Oakwood many years ago, but I guess thats off Ealing's Radar somewhat.A new Station on the Met is to be called Wood Lane, same as the defunct station on the Central Line, and presumably as a stop off for the new Shoping Complex, also to avoid confusion with White City, perhaps White Elephant might be more to the point??

Colin Vaughan ● 6877d

I'm all for renaming Turnham Green to Acton Green. That would get up their snooty noses :)

Gavin Gilbert ● 6877d

Renaming Turnham Green to Acton Green would be confusing.Acton Green was the original name of Chiswick Park station.Thinking back (north-westerly?) to Acton Town perhaps "Acton Town for delays" would be more appropriate, even Bollo Lane, but LUL would always be cleaning off the graffiti.Maybe if we get "the Leaf" in Ealing Broadway the the station should be renamed "Ealing Lord", well we've got Ealing Common...North Ealing could be better named perhaps.

Alan Brainsby ● 6877d

North Ealing? Hangar Hill?

Colin Vaughan ● 6877d

Hanger Hill? I like it. Better than Boileau Road which might be confused with Bollo Lane.Just saw on ITV local news an item about the new overground station at Shepherd's Bush. The platforms are too narrow by about 50cm. This was reported almost 2 months ago elsewhere.Perhaps the station should be renamed Shepherd's Dog. Shepherd's Cock-up might be misconstrued.

Alan Brainsby ● 6876d

Wapping.. is unfair to those who are small.New name required?

Jim Lawes ● 6876d

and Barking (they cant all be mad)..and Cockfosters (censored)

David Archer ● 6876d

Upton Park. Two stops short of Barking...

Alan Brainsby ● 6876d

You can guarantee that if there is a survey  done and the results show that a majority are against his Holy Redness, that they will be completely ignored.

Keith Iddon ● 6876d

How about renaming the Northern Line to the Southern Line to see if it works better?

Alan Brainsby ● 6876d

The only news report I've seen of this is the one on the Evening Standard's site which says that TfL are changing the Hammersmith & City Line station Shepherd's Bush to Shepherd's Bush Market, as announced a long time ago.  (Colin, the H&C stopped being the Met in 1990!)The other changes are being proposed by others, and all Ken said about them was "I am prepared to look at these cases, although there are cost implications of doing so. However, if a case can be made then I will seriously consider changes."  The Standard of course had the misleading headline "Mayor maps out plans to rename four Tube stations".

Richard Jennings ● 6876d

Then thank goodnes we can expect a Tory Bigot to start a misleading campagain against any proposals :)

Gavin Gilbert ● 6875d

Have you anyone in mind, Gavin?  ;-o

Gerry Tan ● 6875d

I thought Acton was called Crackton anyway ;-)

Al Stuart ● 6875d

What does Ken know about the tube?  He goes eveywhere, including the north of England by taxi. Unless of course he is fact finding in South America where he needs a plane as he has failed so far to walk on water. But back to the Tube. Some things are sacred.SAVE MORNINGTON CRESCENT1.

Shouldn't GUNNERSBURY be up Arsenal,Highbury way somewhere?

Jim Lawes ● 6874d

Hmmm! Confusion all round Jim. You might get the Brentford supporter going there by mistake!! Mind you he might be remembering the time when Brenford beat Arsenal 6-3! That was so long ago that Dennis Compton was playing for Arsenal, but thats another story.

Colin Vaughan ● 6874d

Denis Compton Colin, I remember him well..indeed I vaguely recall seeing his brother Leslie playing at Griffin Park, Brentford for the Arsenal.I see there's a station on the London Underground map calledCYPRUS!  I used to tell everyone that I went "abroad" to do part of my National Service..so maybe I didn't leave London after all!!

Jim Lawes ● 6873d

What always puzzled me is why Acton Town is not called Gunnersbury and that the actual Gunnersbury station is miles away......

Joanna Dabrowska ● 6872d

That's because Gunnersbury station is actually in Gunnersbury!

Alan Brainsby ● 6871d

Your right Joanna Gunnesbury Park, for instance is only a short walk down to the A406 Junction.Railway history however is littered with anonomies like that. I suppose its a question of highlighting the destination that people most want to get to, and getting the railway to run as close to it as practically possible.

Colin Vaughan ● 6871d

Gunnersbury Station was once called BRENTFORD ROAD!

Jim Lawes ● 6871d

Brentford Road! Sounds like it should have been a GWR station.Any station with "road" in its name meant it was at least a mile away from the conurbation it was meant to serve.
