Tasers in New Zealand.
It is interesting to note that tasers are being trialled in the UK as an alternative to deadly force.Here in NZ the police are essentially modelled on the UK pattern, i.e. they do not carry sidearms and prefer not to be. Sure 'heavy artillery' is often carried on board the patrol vehicles but no pistols are evident.In the past offenders have been gunned down when threatening arresting police officers but the taser provides a better alternative. Opinion on this issue is divided but the vast majority are in favour of the taser. Statistics have shown that when most offenders are 'painted' by the gun all the fight goes out of them and they surrender rather than endure the excruciating pain of a heavy jolt of electricity. Very few miscreants have been 'shot' by taser in NZ. Hopefully the UK will produce a similar outcome.
