Yes, I remember the event, though I was not living in West London at that time. A battery-box door on a Western class diesel locomotive was not properly secured; the door swung down after the train left Paddington, hit various things including the platform at Ealing Broadway, and finally smashed into a point machine causing the points to move under the train.
