Rubbish!

I knew it would happen. The council re-organise the Monday collection for Saturday. (The information was quite well set out on the back of the magazine!) Less than 50% of the householders on the road put their rubbish out that day. It was duly collected and the road swept afterwards. Now come Monday and the rest of the housholders put their rubbish out! I have informed the council but they say it will not be collected and they have a point. We shall see how much remains out for the rest of the week! I bet this happens to all those who had the collection-date brought forward.

Sorry to hear that some of the refuse in your road will dwell all week. Our date was brought forward to today and sure enough, the excellent rubbish guys collected everything - the plastic, cardboard and all the rest - and swepted up afterwards, bless 'em! We're in Walpole Ward. Am so pleased to say that the refuse collection has been a great success in our area recently - well done Ealing Council. Happy Christmas!  ;-)

Our street looks good too with no rubbish out.  Well done Ealing Council and ECT.  Once this collection has settled down and the signs put up on the roads then I hope the Council will be more proactive in fining those who insist on taking no responsibility for their waste and blight everyone elses lives.  We must be proactive though.  It is no good moaning about ECT not collecting the rubbish and not telling the Council.I'm sorry that your Christmas will be blighted by all the rubbish out Robert. Did you get cards telling you about the change as well as the Around Ealing? Or is part of the problem that you have houses divided into flats there and only one piece of info is delivered per house.

Well we have had trouble ever since they put the recycling and rubbish on the same day - recycling goes but not the rubbish. Because we are the only house on our side of the road we do get missed. However, you are right, you MUST inform Ealing Council. We did and after emails back and forth it has been collected and our house is now monitered. Christmas Eve recycling went but not the rubbish BUT later in the morning a van stopped man got out looked at sack and duly took it away - so we know that the monitering is working - great!No we never get any notices about the rubbish collections and as we rarely get Around Ealing we have to rely on the council website and of course Ealing Today!

The roads look so much better with so much less rubbish out. I think the Council should go around now and make a list of those households that need visiting to remind them about how and when their rubbish should be out and where they can find out from.  Although if you've thrown out the leaflet it is not as if your neighbours are a long way away to ask - when you live in a terrace!!!Interesting that Neighbourhood Net had something about Compulsory Recycling as if it was something new, untried and outrageous just a little time back.  LB Barnet has had compulsory recycling since 2004 and Hammersmith & Fulham have some now (plus other London boroughs).  I have heard how all it needs is the warning letter to jumpstart some households - and then they say it is so easy they don't know why they didn't do it before!  Come on LB Ealing use some bright stickers on those out-too-early bags!Your waste - your responsibility.

Council have enough to do, besides, more paperwork means more cost. Your suggestion of informing your immediate neighbours - next to you, or above and below you - is a much better idea. Furthermore, if every resident swept and kept cleaned their immediate space around their homes, we'd have a super clean borough in no time at all! We all need to force our neighbours to take rubbish more seriously...I agree with your mantra of "your waste - your responsibility".Having said that, I notice that Ealing has become recently a much cleaner place in which to live. Well done Ealing Council!  ;-)

I don't think that the Council would have to do it for long with a lot of people.  I too would like the Council to be able to move on and spend our Council Tax on other things.

Well,the rubbish has been out since last Monday. Elthorne Avenue's pavements are now almost impassable in places, because tomorrow's rubbish is now on the pavements. As I said before, the infomration was on the back of the magazine but no cards were delivered. It is also apparant that those who live in flats do not talk to each other about these matters. There have been significant improvements in rubbish collection but the holiday period has not been thought through, ie bringing collections early does not work!

Are there any poster sites outside Elthorne Park?  I'm sorry it hasn't worked this year for you.  It has worked in our street which had an early collection - except for a couple of properties.  Christmas came rather too quickly after the change in the system and quite a few people are still not making the most of the systems the Council is providing.I think it shows how important it is to pay extra attention to those roads where the collection will be early by handing out the cards.  I would have drawn even more attention on the card to the Monday and Tuesday before Christmas collections being early with a bit more red print as well!You must must must make sure that the Council is aware of how unsatisfactory the situation has been this Christmas.  If you can photograph it - even better.

The advance days system adopted by Ealing Borough has avoided up to two weeks of slipped days experienced in Hounslow according to envious BrentfordTW8 posters!Nobody should be leaving sacks on the pavement at all but in my street 2 small lots have spoilt a perfect collection but still marks us at over 95%!Also heartening is that others who were absentminded or unable to conform  have had the commonsense to hold back for the next collection!

We went for a long walk today and deliberately included walking past Elthorne Park to see if there was a noticeboard outside Elthorne Park.  There is.  This noticeboard is unfortunately not very big ie it could be double the size and used to advertise and gain revenue for the Council AND to put Council info on eg the Christmas Collection Schedule and Christmas Tree Recycling Sites. It advertises something Christmassy at Questors and Yoga every Thursday.  One large A2 and one A4 poster.  There is some chemical reaction which is wrecking these boards but there is great potential for  income and public information being missed. Yes Elthorne Avenue does have loads of black sacks all the way down it and must be the worst of the roads I have walked down this holiday.  I didn't see many green boxes or food waste bins so I guess that is the problem.  Cardboard boxes when not dismantled and flattened take up a lot of room - as do unflattened tetrapaks.Also noticed that Lidl's tetrapak bring bank (beverage cartons!) is full. Why anybody should think it would put people off taking cartons to the banks if they suggested they flatten them beats me.  They are so much easier to carry when flattened!We walked home past Lammas Park where there is another noticeboard with NO mention of Christmas Rubbish & Recycling .  I did laugh to see that under it someone has already dumped a pre-emptive Christmas tree.

Our road is tiny. If you stand in the  middle with your arms outstretched you can almost touch the houses on either side. So the rubbish/recycling crews won't even consider driving a big van down there, destroying the pavement on one side and endangering everyone's wing mirrors/ paintwork would they? Ha. Too much to ask for either a smaller van or for them to park at the top and use their legs ???
