Uxbridge Road Closed

The Uxbridge Road is closed (now!) between the Lido and Green Man Lane, Deans Gardens is sealed off. The word at the farmers market is that there has been a murder.

At the moment BBC London is treating it as a traffic incident, diversions in operation, except Trams of course.

Someone was murdered in Dean Gardens last night - probably about 1.30am. The diverted traffic became noticeable in near us about 2am. There was an N207 night bus stuck trying to turn into our road (I didn't even know and N207 existed - lucky it wasn't a bendy bus), and I had to go out and move our car so that the passengers could push along a van that was blocking the turn, and one of them told me about the murder.

I just did a search for any more news about the murder, and found: Man dies in Southall (from the Ealing Times, showing that wonderful local knowledge it's famous for). Apparently it was a 19-year-old with head injuries.

According to the BBC web site:Teenager dies after park attackA teenager has died in hospital after an attack in a west London park.Police found the young man, who is believed to be 19, in Dean Gardens, West Ealing, in the early hours of the morning.He was taken to hospital but died 40 minutes later from head injuries. A murder inquiry has been launched.A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said Dean Gardens and part of Uxbridge Road would remain closed while forensic experts examined the area.

Your obviously sensible like our Home Secretary David, and safely stay at Home at night. N207 runs from Uxbridge to Holborn, and has done for years. Even in Trolleybus days, a night service Diesel Bus ran on that route. More seriously, another murder in London not good news.I suppose we can expect the usual placatory statements in due course regarding how crime figures are going down etc.

Overall, I believe crime statistics are going down - depending on how you read them as to which are declining most....though our perceptions of crime are not declining, partly due to incidents like this sad one on the Uxbridge Road. But the actual decline (though no-one knows for sure) is probably because we have been reasonably bouyant economically for the last decade or more. With a recession, or at least down-turn, just around the corner, it's likely the crime statistics will get much worse in the next couple of years.

Yet another young boy dies. Tragic, and it makes the mothers of teenagers extremely paranoid for them, just when they need to escape our protection. Almost makes me want to run away from Ealing.

I agree Susan. But run away to where? I've lived in Ealing for 30 years and always thought it was one of the safest places to live in London. Now yet another teenager has died. What is the world coming to?

I feel equally concerned for my teen son - how do you render them street-wise enough to avoid confrontation while not confining them at home nor makig them total wimps....at that's even assuming they are not in a gang, not taking even cannabis, not drinking in groups. Doesn't bear thinking about .... but, as David says, where would you go. the antics in some county towns on a Saturday night make Ealing look civilised and many, many parts of London are worse: think Green Lanes, Tottenham, Peckham, Lewisham, Brixton.I wonder if crime is being focussed on some very specific demographics with teen boys at the top... at the moment I don't think we know.

I know it seems as if it's only London where these things happen but a close friends brother was killed in a similar attack in a remote and picturesque part of Wales 20 years ago - it isn't anything new or exclusive the the metropolis.I wonder how the relative incidence of these attacks works out per head of population?I do think that the amount of drink (and more illicit subsance) consumed by the average young person doesn't help though...and they drink a hell of a lot more than we did at the same age and more regularly and drugs are almost ubiquitous (there's no point burying our heads in the sand).  Even if it doesn't make you a potential murderer it can make you more beligerant and less danger aware and thus a potential victim.I'm not making light of it...I immediately thought 'I hope it isn't someone we know' and then felt guilty - because it being a strangers child only makes it easier for us.

Perhaps we should 'educate' our teenagers in the realities of knife and gun crimes. A trip to the morgue to see the loss of a young life, attendance at a funeral to see the grief of the family trying to cope and understand and finally a visit to a prison to see what they can expect if locked up. Maybe the shock value will do some good.

Am probably going to open up a can of worms here but discipline is what's needed in todays society. Ferrel youths roam the streets of our country doing what they like because the law is too soft on them. Thy know they will get a slap on the wrists and an asbo (something alot of these hooligans gloat about). A good clip round the ear and harsh punishment is what's needed for these thugs that roam the streets looking for trouble. My sympathy for the bereaved family. I live close to the park and was deeply shocked at the news. As a mother it's very worrying.

The report in today's Standard is that it was a gang thing - the young man had been in one and had fallen out or tried to leave and there had been several other attacks previously.Doesn't make it any better for the family but we could discuss whether random attacks are more or less worrying than ones where the perpetrators know the victim.

Just heard on the news at midnight that 3 men have been arrested in connection with the murder of the teenager in West Ealing. That's pretty impressive police work if they've got the right men. I just watched the Louis Theroux programme online about San Quentin jail. Gang members who try to leave the gangs have to be segregated for their own good and even when they leave jail, they're warned they're on the gang's hit list. Guess it's true that we take all the bad things from the US.

"Guess it's true that we take all the bad things from the US."Not so sure you're right David.  Surely, we should be eternally grateful to our American cousins for the likes of:blueberry pieHollywood moviesroast turkeyhotdogs/hamburgerscentral heating and air cond.cheap mortgagesTina(Thunder thighs) Turner.Back to serious matters, although there are a few no-go areas in Ealing, especially at nights and w/ends, sunny Ealing is a pleasant and safe place in which to live.

You could have added a more serious aspect to thank are American friends for Gerry. The thousands of young men who fought alongside us in WW2 and shed their blood here. A visit to the USAF Cemetry in Cambridge is a moving experience.

Don't get me wrong from my previous posting. I wasn't knocking our American cousins. I have visited many cities in the USA ( Honolulu,San Francisco, Los Angeles, Vegas, Atlanta,Boston, New York).I have spent 3 weeks driving around Florida visiting superb places such as St. Petersburg, Naples, Everglades, Key West. Never had a bad experience.I just felt that we bypass the many good things americans take for granted and get too many of the bad things (guns, drugs, gangs).

Wars very often have a positive effect on things Peter. Technological benefits in Electronics, Computer Engineering, Travel facilities etc, eventually benefit all Societies.It just takes longer to filter through. However although those at Home benefit, the sacrifice in blood remains. I am sure those souls of the young men at the Cambridge Cemetry and elsewhere in Foriegn Fields, would not now begrudge the benefits that accruded to their families at home.

I don't feel war has many positive benefits for societies but I fully concede that the 'fear' of war can promote and encourage technologies which can benefit societies and I'm thinking of the cold war here. What has this got to do with the murder in Dean Gardens? Well in my mind the driving force in both cases is 'fear' and the 'power to exert fear', fear of losing face within your gang or society, it's just a matter of degree, so you try to exert force and power through fear, to control those who threaten your position or from whom you can extract benefits.  Unfortunately in extreme cases, violence can occur and it matters not, whether it's two societies having a war or two gang members having a fight, a grave is still a grave to the victims.
