Hanwell Revisited!  Let's have a journey around!

Hanwell is certainly worth exploring...with lots of Victorian and perhaps Edwardian buildings ..quaint streets,shops,factories,warehouses and surprises..and I'm mindful that there are several Forum visitors in distant places who might find a thread like this interesting!!Wandering around with a camera has it's rewards...and we are lucky that we can upload images on these Forums, which sometimes helps to add interest. So, apologies if you are fed up with pictures!!So, for interest, discussion and to help us learn about our neighbourhoods, lets go go go! Please join in..and upload pictures too.

Hi Gerry,Thanks for that. This is an old part of the region isn't it....would have been very busy around here around the year 1800 as they were finishing the building of the Canal..many years before the railway arrived!---------------------------------------------------------How old would these trees be?

Hi Samatha and Viv..and Gerry and Hanwellians..whether you live here or not!The A-Z says that the green is called THE HEATH? Is that what local call it?---------------------------------------------------------The road is Lower Boston Road..lovely old(e!) house round the corner on the right! Piccie needed! Fortunately the road was quiet!--------------------------------------------------------I liked the trees on the green..seen well on a sunny day!--------------------------------------------------------Hang on what's that over there?-----------------------------------------------------What's that?

Has anyone ever done this sort of thing on the forum in Acton?We have just been discussing with neighbours why certain roads got their names etc. such as:Faraday Road Acton we think was named afterMichael Faraday 1746-1867Chemist, experimental physicist & philosopherBrougham Road we think was named afterHenry Peter Brougham 1776-1868Jurist & politicianHe also designed the "Brougham" carriage which was named after him!Birkbeck Road we think was named afterGeorge Birkbeck 1776-1841Physician & educationistThen another forum member wrote on ActonW3.com that aSir John Alcock 1892-1919 who with Sir Arthur Whitten-Brown made the first direct aeroplane flight acrooooss the Atlantic, and he is said to have lived in these parts!It is really interesting to learn about the local history!The photos taken around Hanwell are great!Robert & Jean

Hi Robert and Jean.Yes street names are good to study and often reveal the names of past residents to whom we should be grateful.We did have an "exploring Acton thread" a couple of years back and it has a good deal of observations about the historic town.  I'll place it on the front page of the acton Forum for you to see..as it's currently lurking in the Archives!!Here's that Hanwell building again.

Hi Jim,Thanks a million for posting all the information on Acton, we could spend HOURS just looking at all the contributions!Time for a cuppa but we shall be spending some more time looking at all the pictures etc.Also we must have a go at Google, haven't tried this yet but have heard it is very good!Thanks once again, we really appreciate it!Let's hope more "Actonions" contribute to this excellent topic.Robert & Jean

Jim, these are beautiful pictures of a delightful area of Ealing(Hanwell) - thanks for observing and posting them here. The Victorian buildings are so nice to see and the brickwork is beautiful. A great area in which to live I think.

Jimthe pictures of the Church (now flats) are Stunning.  And I take it that it was St Marks Church, with St Marks School opposite and the next road to Green Lane being St Marks Road.  One of the other good conversions of a lovely old building is St Barnards, any chance of some pics of that one??

This is the green next to The Dolphin, and the view from the Dolphin garden - it is a very pleasant spot.

Hi Jo,Yes some shots of the St Bernards would be a good idea. I ought to endeavour to go there when it's sunny to get some better images.I'm not too clever explaining how to post pictures on the Forum..but will happily help anyone over the phone or at the next Forum meet up. Peter and several others are experts greater than I!Bunny Park is another venue to visit for Cindy.

Delightful little terrace of Victorian cottages - hope they retain these precious architectural gems - shame about the dish aerials and the lack of paint on the blue door though.

That's good.It's a good idea before uploading a pictute onto the Flickr website, to deal with the massaging (brightness, balance, cropping etc) and perhaps reducing the size.  In many cases I reduce the picture size to xxx  x 447 as this seems to fit Forum pages.Once uploaded, and you click on your picture..you will see "Other sizes"..and you can choose the size you wish to plonk on the Forum page.If you use the URL above..you will have your picture framed.  If you wish no frame you just use the "address url" at the top of the page.. and attach the thingies at each end.The fun starts!

Forgot to say, my favourite road was in the process of being built in 1887-1888 but only one house was occupied in that 12 month period. I can't wait for the library to re-open I want to document the history if the whole 'Hood'

I think this cut place on UXb Rd has been sold now. Who knows what it will be in a year's time? Hmm a fast food place would be nice - you can never get anything to eat in Hanwell !

Yes, in the way the attic frontage gives a bit more character - presume late Victorian. Note the Salvador Dali drainpipe!

There's a strange quality about old photos that's very appealing. When was this taken please?  Thank goodness there ain't any aerials in sight - especially those ugly new dish jobs.

Interesting photo, pity there are no people in shot. I have many Transport photos of anything from 1890, through to 1950, and what strikes you forcibly is order and disipline that pervades these scenes. Its the people that makes the interest, an orderly queue at the Bus/Trolleybus Stop in the Tottenham High Road after a Spurs Football Match on a misty Saturday Afternoon. I have been in such queues at the age of 9 or 10, says it all doesn't it!
