These people have sent me a letter saying they want to inspect my recently installed double glazing.  I am a man who thnks we are over regulated so why should I not ignore these people?

I assume this is the British Board of Agrément, who probably want to inspect your double glazing installer's workmanship as part of an approval process. If so, your installer should have warned you first.  You could reply stating that your fee would be £x per hour for hosting their unsolicited visit.

Thanks Richard - now I'm beginning to understand. Does this mean that, if in future, I get building work/house improvements done, like a new gas boiler, a new roof, d/glazed french windows, chimney lined with s/steel tube, elecrtical ring mains installed etc etc I should get a certificate to prove that work has been done to an agreed building standard? If so, I think it's a good idea. Where would I find more information on this point of building approval/certification please? Thanks.

Building Control at the council have to regulate many of those examples, Gerry.

Yes Gerry you're correct. If you have new windows installed you must get a Fensa certificate. If you want to sell your house you'll need to present the cert. to prove work was done by an approved contractor. If you dont have one, you could have problems selling and in theory you may need to replace the windows.
