Hhmm! Alan, that reminds me of a Telephone Exchange that I worked at many years ago that had 3 FLOORS, but no lift. It had been decreed by the Ministry of Works (this being in the days of State ownership long before BT)that the number of steps in the various flights was just too short to justify a lift. The cynical view voiced by the Operators who had to access the Manual Switchboard on the top floor that it was a dark plot on behalf of the GPO Teephone Service to ensure that some Operators did not reach retirement thus saving on pension provision!!!!
