M1 lane sharing farce

If you have been up the M1 over the last couple of years you will have been inconvenienced by the widening of the motorway between St Albans and Luton for the introduction of the High Occupancy Vehicle lane.  This has cost millions of pounds and has now been scrapped because it is considered too dangerous to operate and impossible to enforce.  Yet again Joe Public has to foot the bill for planning and ministerial incompetence.www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/article-23450289-details/Flagship+M1+car-sharing+lane+is+brought+to+a+standstill+before+it+even+opens+due+to+safety+fears/article.do

Well at least the M1 has got another lane. Such ideas have been tried in the USA, and have not been as successful as first thought. the obvious reason for this, quite appart from the safety and Policing aspects, is that is left to individuals to make their own arrangements as to actual sharing. Unless you and say your next-door neighbour, work at the same destination, and have identicle hours, it seems a scheme doomed to failure, thought up by people who don't live in the real everyday World.
