Best fire extinguishers

What are the best domestic fire extinguishers?  Having searched the internet, I'm confused with the vast range of products available.  What brand and type of fire extinguishers would you choose for your kitchen and garage? And on the same(ish) theme, what do you think about home smoke alarm systems?  Are they any good?  Thanks.

If you have not got a smoke alarm Gerry, a battery operated one is best, preferably one that'chirps' when the battery is running low. For domestic use Dry Foam is the best sort. I have one in the Kitchen. Don't however use it on a fire started by a live electric appliance. a visit to your local Fire Station would be your best bet, as they can advise you on every situation.

Australians recommend Fosters. But you have to drink it first!I would suggest dry foam as well. If you go for any compressed gas system remember they do have a finite life as they gradually leak.

Gerry, the local fire brigade were visiting and advising about smoke detectors; supplying and fitting them free a couple of years ago (I don't know the situation now).  The Police do the same with home security - your son will know about that though!  :-)
