Who to tip??

I'm hoping you can help me out here as regards tipping..... I always tip my pizza delivery chap, milky, postie at Christmas etc.  But, I had my first Ocado home delivery shop today, should I have tipped them??  They seemed to loiter a bit at the end and I didn't really think about it till they had gone!!  I know one normally tips when good service has been received but do you or don't you tip the food delivery guy????

It never occured to me to tip them...and I'm sure they've never looked at me in an evil way, so probably not.Ocado isn't exactly cheap - I think you've already paid for good service.

I read a newspaper report last year saying that Tesco were sacking their full time drivers and hiring in Polish drivers on a temporary basis because it is  cheaper.  Are Ocado doing the same?

I have had Ocado deliver for well over a year now - I have never tipped and have never been given the impression that a tip was expected.

Sometimes I feel like sacking my husband and getting a Polish one who will do all the DIY so I don't have too - except I've already been there and done that. ;-)

Have never tipped for Ocado delivery - they do charge for it...but you may be right about the changing workforce - this week's was a heavily accented chap called Marek.

I resent all extras whether having to tip, pay service charges or added sales tax as in the US. I prefer inclusive up front billing and employers who pay their staff properly.

I have been having my shopping delivered by Waitrose for some time not (from the store rather than via Ocado). The very first time, when I proferred a tip, it was very firmly refused and I was told that they were not allowed to accept tips. They do make a small (£3) delivery charge.Tempted by recommendations on this Forum, I recently ordered a take-away from Rasol and then started worrying about whether to offer a tip or not. In the end I didn't. What do others do?

Tipping is a strange business - I don't like it.I'm with Graham on this one, in that I like to see the total costs up front, like they do in Singapore for instance. If you offered a tip there, it's generally frowned upon - unless it's for exceptional(but really exceptional) service!  In Singapore it's thought by the receiver to be a bit demeaning and a touch insulting of the giver.I don't like tipping - but I'm mean.  :-(

We always tip the food delivery guys - Rasoi, Cardamom and Maxims etc. When in doubt (i.e. IKEA) I just ask the delivery guy himself if it is usual to tip for his service - a couple of pound is usually appreciated.

I tip waiters and hairdressers and that's it,  I think.  Cannot bear the USA systen have to tip everyone it's such a pain much easier if all incorporated into the price upfront.I have never even considered tipping food delivery people!! Maybe I'm tight?!

Thank you for all your replies.... I'm not keen on the culture of tipping everybody either.... Maybe I'm tight too!!

'Sense Of Joy' at the Epsom Oaks, 2nd of June 2008 3:45pm.25% commission for a win, nothing to pay if it loses.

Oh ha ha!I always tip in restaurants (unless the service has been terrible) and always at the hairdressers if junior staff have washed my hair.  I've decided I won't insult the senior stylists with a tip as the way they talk about their skiing holidays and new kitchens etc they obviously have far more spare cash already than I do.I've never tipped food delivery guys...it never occurred to me!
