It is not realistic to compare what the PM or Cabinet members get paid with the private sector, the latter will be driven by the market and include (sometimes dodgy )performance bonuses/share options, hence headlines of £15-£20m pa. Politicians and senior Public Servants pay is judged by what pay review bodies think they can justify, by comparable, to joe public. Hence relative peanuts......But they do not do it for the money knowing they could earn much more in the private sector, and perhaps will do post retirement....LA CEO's fall between. They are not elected, there is a shortage of good candidates, and LA politicians want the best.I have no problem with the pay of senior LA staff, they run large, complex, risky, businesses and are often speedily ejected (on contractual terms) on a change of party control or poor Audit Commission inspection. To complain that LA CEO's are paid more than the pm sounds like political spin from the likes of the Mail, Express, Evening Standard or supporters of the opposition who have not thought things through. Did not the newly elected councillors of both Ealing and Hammersmith significantly increase their paid allowances?. (possibly OK by me following the logic) Kettle and black come to mind.......
