Red Bananas

I see that Morrisons are stocking Red Bananas. April 1st is now long gone,so has anyone tried them? Are they a small sweet variety? I have tasted a small sweet banana in the Far East some years ago, but was told that they don't travel well, unlike the Carabean types. Gerry might know??

Dunno about red bananas Colin - can't recall ever seeing them. But I did spy some purple/blue carrots in one of those interesting ethnic greengrocers in West Ealing yesterday! And they were definitely carrots and not some other exotic vegetable, 'cos I asked the nice bloke what they were and he confirmed they were a special type of carrot. In fact, he snapped a small one in half and offered me a taste!

I've eaten Ecuadorian red bananas.  I bought them here several years ago.  I remember them as being sweet and slightly creamy.  I don't remember eating them in South America but I do remember eating plantain crisps there.  I remember plantains as being banana family but not sweet and they were cooked and used as a vegetable as they do in Africa.

Interesting what you find out when you surf the web. I see that you can get blue bananas that taste like custard and have the texture of marshmallow. Also found out that bananas don't grow on trees as actually it is a herb.

It has often been said that early British Carrots were purple blue and the only reason they are mainly orange nowadays is down to the Dutch propagating them and making them universally popular.Likewise people associate Tulips with Holland but in fact they originated amongst much trading intrigue in the far east. What other well travelled foods are there?

In Beatrix Potter's painting of Peter Rabbit I believe he is supposed to be eating/holding a long radish.  It actually looks like a pink carrot.  I have only seen long white radishes and round pink radishes.

Vanilla stocks rainboe carrots: some deep purple and some white. they don't really taste different from orange ones but do look pretty.
