Cures for baldness?

When my Dad's hair started to thin many moons ago the only advice available was to shave the lot off "because it will grow back thicker"  ....What advice would he be given, these days?

I'll never forget the "and finally" report on the news many years ago that said a farmer had discovered a cure for baldness after one of his cows started to lick his bald spot.Sadly the report didn't expand on any reasons as to why he had done this in the first place - but there you go.Nearest cows are in Ham I think?

I had a colleague who used Regaine.It worked very well, but if one stops using it, guess what?One's hair falls out!

Sarah, the Chinese have a sure-fire remedy for baldness. Eat lots of seaweed jelly, drink lots of Chinese tea and have an active sex life! It never fails. Eschew all western European so called remedies - they don't work. The Chinese know a thing or two about health and lifestyles; 1.3Billion of us can't be wrong!  ;-)

Should a 19 year old losing lots of hair visit the Dr first?  What is in regain? Chinese medicine is very interesting - but how do you know you are being given safe doses?

A 19yo shouldn't be losing hair, unless it's an inherited condition.It's probably worthwhile checking with one's GP before using Regaine anyway as the drug was developed for high blood pressure treatment. Rubbed into the scalp it should be fairly harmless anyway. It is used for male-pattern baldness only, not other causes.Regaine contains minoxidil. Google it - minoxidil wiki - for a description. Keep it away from cats! I didn't know it was lethal, as is aspirin, to them.As regards chinese medicine, 1.3 billion is a lot, but would there be even more of them if they adopted western medicine? Birth control aside. :)

Dr Fu Manchu had a beard and moustashe which would have been envied by Salvador Dali.

Gerry,apparently another reason why Chinese/Japanese don't seem to go bald so often is soy sauce - according to one report it, too, reduces baldness....

Why of course David - thanks for reminding me, I forgot about that well tried and efficacious elixir of life , good old soy sauce. It was well known, even before Ghengis Khan's day. It was(and still is) great for gout and piles too - and Mr Khan needed it 'cos of all that horse riding he did!  ;-)
