Hurrah - a CPZ !

At last, we're getting a CPZ in our immediate neighbourhood. For years, we've been plagued by commuters, young parents, TVU and other college students, shoppers, contractors vans, shopp workers and sundry others - they often park across our drives and dangerously on corners and narrow T junctions in our area. For many years, we've been moving for a CPZ(much to the disgust of a few local motorheads, who believe the roads should be free for parking 24/7 for all) and now we're getting a CPZ.  Hurrah - life is good!  ;-)

Hi Gerry, I am sure that it's a good thing for you but am just wondering, will it affect the top of Elers Road, by the interchange between Lammas and Walpole Parks? We always park there and walk through Walpole Park to go into the Broadway. Will the CPZ be operational all the time  or is just an hour or two a day?

Penny, my understanding is that the new Ealing Dean CPZ will take in the top end of Elers Road and much of the hinterland west(ish) of Culmington Road. It'll be an hour in the morning and afternoon, thank goodness. For years, we've been cheesed-off with cars parking in our road and going to the three underground stations in our area, TVU, Ealing Studios and those who want a quick(ish) walk through Walpole Park to the shops at High/Bond Streets and the EBSC.Hope you'll still find a convenient place in which to park when you go shopping.  ;-)

An hour in the morning and one in the afternoon is quite the best policy, I think, just to stop people parking all day for the tube, while allowing visiting and local shopping.

I agree about two 1 hour slots.It certainly stops the "free" all-day commuter parking which is the big problem in central Ealing, railway stations, schools, offices, etc.I'm always amazed how residents' vehicles "melt" away when a CPZ is introduced, even allowing for garages and driveways.Perhaps someone can explain how this phenomenon occurs.

It's all very odd. When Twyford Avenue became a CPZ, there were suddenly only half the number of cars parked there. But it's not really near anywhere, so why were all those non-residents parked there in the first place?

There are  always a few people in the new CPZ zone who don't want to pay for either their own permit or for their visitors permits, so they head down to the first few roads nearest their own without a  CPZ  to park their cars/vans.  There are some very unneighbourly folk about.

I would not want one where i live and hate them when i visit friends and cannot park. It reminds me of speed bumps. No-one wants them except in their own road.

Graham - your friends should have a supply of parking vouchers for when you visit.  Most people living in CPZs buy a small supply for visitors to park.

Some CPZs do not have visitor parking vouchers (e.g. my grandmother's street only has £1.80 per hour pay & display machines!).  Plus, my understanding is that if you do not have a vehicle or pay for a vehicle under the CPZ scheme (e.g. you have a driveway) you cannot purchase visitor parking vouchers.

I don't think that's right is it? Why should non-drivers not be able to have driving (and parking) visitors, even if they don't have a permit themselves? Will ask next door where I don't think they have the permits because they do have a drive.

I have a drive & have opposed CPZ due to this very point (amongst others!), but I now live just over the border in Brent.I do find that each borough tends to have it's own rules & regulations for CPZ.Additionally, I know that Hammersmith & Fulham has different rules for different parts of the borough; very confusing!

That's not what the council website says (http://www.ealing.gov.uk/services/transport_and_streets/parking/controlled_parking_zones/) "In order to apply for residents’ visitor vouchers or business visitor vouchers you must be a resident or a business in the controlled parking zone (CPZ) for which you are applying."Nothing about having to have a car permit of your own.

Not all car owning residents can get a parking permit.  In most areas you have to supply log book form to prove local address.  In newly developed areas the council has a discriminatory policy of not issuing permits to certain residents - example the work now going on in Kirchen Road has a section 106 planning condition that only 2 disabled residents will be able to park, the others will not be allowed a parking permit at all.I now live technically on a road with no actual parking and nearby roads are two different zones so I cannot get a permit to park and have to park miles away or run the game of move the car in time.  Good luck to the new Ealing Dean CPZ but I have lost another place to dump my car - maybe it is time to dump my car altogether.Would I qualify for a lower rate of Council Tax because I do not have the same amenities as others?

It is definitely a misconception that people who don't have cars cannot purchase Visitors vouchers. My area is about to get CPZ (starting May 1st) and I have just filled in all the forms. So I can categorically tell you that anyone resident in the road can apply for Visitors vouchers whether they have a car or not.You might also like to know that it is possible to purchase Borough Wide Visitor Service vouchers at £10 per book (£1 per hour) for use anywhere in the borough. But I can't tell you how happy I am that we are getting our CPZ too!!

So pleased to hear you're happy with your proposed CPZ Angela.May I be so bold as to ask what area of sunny Ealing you're in?  We're in the proposed Ealing Dean CPZ area and we're told we'll have ours by this summer. Good luck and enjoy!  ;-)
