Is this to be a public execution? :-)

Bless you Alan no, this ain't gonna be a hanging job, God forbid! I've never had that lynching attitude!I'm just trying to help a novice allotmentier to create his raised vegetable beds. It's the best way to grow his pak choi, Chinese celery and tender bamboo shoots! So if you know of some cheap used scaffold boards for sale, do please let us know. Being strapped for cash and rather skint, my novice gardener friend needs all the help I have to offer.  ;-)

You could try Ealing Freecycle. This sort of thing pops up a lot - both people asking for and getting rid of them. Usually builders leave some behind after a job.

How does Chinese celery differ to British celery, Gerry?I've also got an allotment, first sowing this year.  Did you know that last summer on my allotment site, there were about 10 spare sites and now there is a waiting list?  Great minds think alike.

Barbara, Chinese celery is a misnomer. In Europe it's called a fennel bulb, that odd shaped flattened oval white coloured bulb, often used raw and sliced in salads, but which may be boiled or braised and which has a strong taste of aniseed.Great to hear you're an allotmenter.  I had a couple of allotments behind St Mary's Church W5 for seven growing seasons - great fun and wonderful fellow gardeners there too. One in particular called Nigel who was a most enthusiastic and supportive gardener - a good man who for years raised enormous funds for various charities in Ealing and who's done(perhaps still doing) great work on the green/environmental scenes. I think he was a Councillor(at least I think he was) and a very good one too. A man with an engaging sense of humour - haven't all gardeners - with a great zest for life. He ceratinly knwew his onions!Good luck with your allotment.  ;-)

That's good, 'cos I've sewn fennel too. We eat a lot of it in our household. Can't believe you're talking about my fellow Councillor Nigel!  I've had to put up with Nigel now for at least 12 years.  Our ward is awash with flowering bulbs and trees because of Nigel.  You are quite right, he is warm hearted and a perfect host.
