Old signage

I've noticed quite a bit of decades-old signage around Ealing, especially in Hanwell, which I think is fascinating. What is your favourite old signage and what do you know about the business to which it related? Are they protected in any way?

Perhaps you mean the faded lettering on some shop side walls advertising long lost businesses. There are a few about and no nothing done to preserve them as far as know which is a great shame.

Yes, for instance Edwards furnishing next to the North Star in Ealing Broadway, Rowland Clay on Drayton Green Road in West Ealing, Ormon Draper and Ladies' Outfitters and Gapp Stores at the back of the Uxbridge Road/Station Road junction in Hanwell. Fascinating and a shame they're not preserved.

There is also a Jay Bros Tailors sign and a Winsor and Newton Artists' Materials on the south side of the Uxbridge Road in West Ealing on the stretch between Northfield Avenue and Culmington Rd. In Acton there is a Dadd's Boot & Shoe Warehouse sign on the south side of the High Street, east of Church Rd, an Iron Jelloids advert in Horn Lane near Market Place,and a Lavender Soap one covering most of the side of a house at the junction of the High Street and Birkbeck Rd. If the modern hoarding were removed you'd see a lot more of it. Finally, again in the High St, there is an almost-invisible, painted-over sign on the side of the former London and County Bank, now a branch of NatWest, on the corner of Berrymead Gardens.
