Male beach wear

I am planning a summer holiday, but never know what to wear on the beach. I usually wear speedos, but find the sand irritates my lower legs and feet, even when wearing flip flops.Is it acceptable for a man to wear speedos with knee high socks and sandles? Could this be viewed as a 'good look'? Sorry, but I really am clueless when it comes to matters of fashion.

socks and sandals never acceptable together....and I speak as the wife of an Englishman who frequently commits this sartorial solecism. How come continentals never do it?And if you must wear a T-shirt over your speedos, make sure the label isn't sticking out at the neck...another very British failing.And if you are over about 22, no bermuda shorts or shirts in foul patterns and loud colours.Enough direction?

socks and shorts aren't a good look, let alone socks with speedos, or sandals.If you want to look ok you're going to have to suffer :-)

But surely an English gentleman never wants to get himself noticed for what he is wearing... wasn't that the dictat of Beau Brummel to which all good chaps have subscribed ever since (except David Beckham and I'm not sure he counts)

I was a little worried when you proclaimed you liked to wear speedos as these are for those who want to attract attention though goodness knows many should look in the mirror first.  Still at least we know you won;t be at Brighton as there is no sand there to irritate you.The best bathing costumes were those wonderful all in one outfits popularised by folk such as Matthew Webb but they are not seen on the beach often anymore unless it is BognorBut why not evade the problem altogether and take the family to a naturist beach where people are no longer fashionistas but just sun lovers.

Thanks for all the advice. On reflection, I think I'll wear my twead plus fours, golfing socks and shoes. I will also apply a thick film of 'channel grease' to my upper body to keep warm in case things get nippy.I think this strikes the right balance between comfort and the 'cool' image I'd like to portray. Ideal for a game of crazy golf afterwards too!

On the basis that you are on a relaxing holiday, I say you should wear absolutely anything that takes your fancy. It adds to all of our holiday entertainment and enjoyment  watching and laughing at other people on the beach in all their weird and wonderful outfits (and bodies!).
