Eurovision Song Contest

Does anyone watch this?  Is it relevant?  Could it be better?  Should it be scrapped? We watched it as a bit of background noise last Saturday. I thought the songs awful (except for Denmark's) and the voting, bizarre.  Poor old Wogan, he's losing the will to live.

If Wogan walks, he's going to take a lot of viewers with him.Our song was lame, but no more than so than plenty of others. I have a horrible feeling that Andy Abraham lost a lot of votes through having the temerity to be black. You only have to think back to the disgusting abuse suffered by Louis Hamilton in Spain last year.

I remember the S(P)ong Contest 44 years ago listening to it whilst on Honeymoon. In those days we marvelled at seeing French People in Calais (no they hadn't all got 2 heads!) in Black and White 405 line TV. ITS WELL PASSED ITS SELL BY DATE. Hailed at the time as the start of a rapid intergration with European TV programmes, the prediction of which failed to materialise. If Wogan goes, your right Susan the viewing figures will plummet, and what will the 'Suits'do then poor things??

Sit in a barn and keep themselves warm and hide their heads under their wings, poor things.

You know the nursery rhyme too Susan

I was watching the Eurovision Song Contest for 1956 the other day.  Picture quality was cr*p but the songs were better. My favourite ESC winner was France 1960 - Tom Pillibi -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hjP98w1UMA

What would British TV do without the Irish?

Susan Kelly ● 6700d

Sound more British. Orla Geurin, or however she spells it does not sound like a British broadcaster. OTH Trevor MacD does.

Graham Weeks ● 6700d

Many of the plantation owners in the Southern US states and the Caribbean were Irish or Scottish...Lawdy! Lawdy!

Alan Brainsby ● 6700d

I'd scrap it Barbara.  I give it nil points!  :-(

This is sooo amusing - they (they being the continental participants) say that we (as a nation) don't get it.I remember before Terry Wogan my Mum saying the voting was daft - and then, there was Terry Wogan repeating her word for word!My boys are all brought up on the voting - we never watch for the songs.  I looked at some information about Terry and found that he once referred to the hosts of the 2001 contest in Denmark as 'Doctor Death and the Tooth Fairy' and was apparently banned from visiting Denmark!  :-)What we can't understand is why Russia is now in Europe?

Sarah Felstead ● 6699d

Russia itself, as opposed to the great mass of the Soviet Union, has always been deemed to be in Europe. Not so sure about Israel.

Susan Kelly ● 6699d

Or Turkey for that matter.

Gerry Tan ● 6699d

On the Border Gerry. A place where East meets West.Certainly on the Western side in the Golden Horn area, it is a typically Meditereanian country.

As a matter of interest how much money does the UK contribute to the Eurovision contest?

Peter Wright ● 6699d

The trouble is that countries with a few people have the same number of votes as those with many times their population. It is just like the UN. Why should Latvia with a 20th of the UK population have the same number of votes as us?

Graham Weeks ● 6699d

It's "eurovision" remember. So any state with a broadcaster that is a member of the eurovision group - active throughout the year on news feeds, event coverage etc but only known for beastly song coverage - is eligible.I suspect Israel is there for the same reason as she is in the European group for football: can scarcely be in the same group as Syria, Lebanon, Iraq etc

Methinks it's long overdue that both this purile contest and woeful Wogan were put down for good. How much longer do we have to put up with the whole self serving lot of them?It is partly funded by your license fee, btw, and is a cheap way for the bbc to get a few million viewers.'Poor old Wogan?'...qiute the opposite. He's made a fortune peddling the same old rubbish for 30 years.

Keith Iddon ● 6699d

Would Te Deum by Marc-Antoine Charpentier ever win?I'm sure you all have heard the tune. But where you may ask?Demonstrate your ignorance or knowledge by replying. :)All it needs is to be vocalized. It could be entered by France, or, if it was a member of Eurovision, The Vatican State.

Sara,What would Irish presenters do without British TV?

Maybe we should pull out of the Eurovision Song Contest when Wogan expires, or 30th June 2008, whichever happens first.

Alan Brainsby ● 6699d

I think if Wogan goes - we should too.  :-)

Sarah Felstead ● 6699d

Good point, Kevin.

Susan Kelly ● 6698d

Wogan seems to be one of those presenters who polarise opinion, like Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand. I love 'em all.

Susan Kelly ● 6698d

We were watching 'Jack the Ripper' while this was on and only watched 30 seconds of voting to see that we were at the bottom again but the video of the winner looks good.
