Interesting crime map....

Have a look at http://maps.met.police.uk/ Put in your postcode and it shows the level of "burglary, robbery and vehicle crime" in each small area. Ours was deemed "below average" (although as the two figures quoted were zero, do criminals have to turn up giving stuff back to be deemed "Low"??? [naturally, there is probably some theft or car crime going on, just very little and not during the time period quoted]).However, a couple of parts of Hanwell (Uxbridge Rd down to Wickes and Hanwell station/Manor Court/Church Road) seem to be criminal hot spots...

It did not work with the first web reader that I tried, there was a "Please wait" message on screen, and a "You do not have permission" message when I tried to enter Ealing or my postcode. It did work with another, and showed that both my house, and in a different area that of my sister, are on the edge of high crime areas, both used to be low.

Very interesting... but so, so stupid (if anyone remembers Rowan and Martin's Laugh-in).The map identifies those areas, below average, where easy pickings can still be made.It possibly identifies areas where police presence is below average.And what is average for London? A 1 in 100 chance of a car being broken into, a 1 in 1 000 chance of being burgled, a 1 in 2 000 chance of being mugged? I am not complaining about the absence of knife crime, murder or vandalism. The maps have to start somewhere and this data (or is it these data?) could be added later.

The detailed crime data which is linked to from the maps is much better and has much of the information you asked for. I don't really see what this system tells us about local crime other than generating a pretty picture. Does anybody know how much it cost?

The software looks similar to the flood risk maps, and I would hope that data entry was automated from a database so nobody had to wade through a huge list. Just tell a computer to plod on.

http://www.publicprofiler.org/worldnames/Shows where people have settled - was in the news at the same time as the crime map and both were blocked for ages.The Tans, as with the Felsteads, appear to have moved over to Oz.
