There is a point here though and it goes further than just comparing prices. Carluccio's may be cheaper than Waitrose for the 400g loaf, but they're a company that rips off its staff with shoddy wage practices, paying less than minimum wage, and is less than open with the way it charges its customers in order to finance those practices. Personally I'd rather pay the £2.29 at Waitrose, part of the John Lewis Partnership. However, why pay those prices at all when you can get a large 800g loaf of Pugliese bread (again from Exeter St Bakery) from West Ealing farmers market for £2.85? Double the size of Carluccio's and Waitrose, and much cheaper than the £4 for exactly the same product at Terracotta (which I noted this morning is closed for 2 weeks and has its windows papered up).
