Kelly's Directory

I'm doing a bit of research which has meant looking at Kelly's quite a bit.  One thing is foxing me; if an entry in the street directory section  says  "Fred Smith cobbler" lived at number 10 in 1895,  does that mean the premises was a cobbler's shop - or is it merely indicating his profession  ?

You might try a direct e-mail to our Jim as he uses and quotes from Kelly's... well he did when he was posting on the forums!  He catches his e-mail from cyber cafes so would pick a message up.

Linda does the family research in our household and she says that although that would be his profession you cannot assume it was a shop. Of course it is quite probable that he worked there too - the census usually says if it was a shop or someone working at home.
