May I make a suggestion, one that I have done and which looks very nice and produces a piece of furniture the like of which costs hundreds in shops, ie sand the top of the table with a belt or orbital sander, down to the bare wood. Oak when sanded down looks very nice, and can then be CLEAR waxed. If you want to complete the " picture " paint the rest of the table with a pale colour and then distress that, followed up with more clear waxing.
