Nuisance calls.

Two days ago I was plagued by nuisance calls at work. I had about a dozen, silent except for one or two bleeps. The number was withheld. I did not fancy spending time contacting some BT call centre in India. Can anything be done?

Probably silent marketing calls - ie they dial out but when they connect, there is no free operator so it just goes dead.Not allowed - Ofcom have just fined one household name company the maximum £50,000 for doing just that.

Is it showing up'InternationaL'. on the caller display Graham? If so, there is not much you can do about it. If within the UK then OFCOM can act upon it. Most firms into this sort of thing have twigged that some time ago. So most of these comes from India, but 'Free' Holiday scams etc usually come from a Cuban or maybe a Barbados source.

When my caller ID says International, I pick up and immediately hang up again. That gets rid of them for a few days; I suppose their computerised system tells them that the call didn't get through to that number.

I had  charlatans from Nigeria a couple of years ago calling up and giving the usual spiel about sending my bank account details as I have won a fortune or words to that effect. I said that there was someone at my front door and to pleasehang on. I put the phone hand set in a drawer and after I had had a cuppa,picked the handset up again and asked them if they had had enough of waiting and hung up. Seemed to do the trick.

You could join the telephone preference service which certainly gets rid of a proportion of home-based calls...but doesn't seem to affect foreign ones and I don't know if you can register a business.

By the way don't whatever you do respond to these callers by keying any numbers asked for, because that can allow them access to your outlet resulting in huge bills for Premium Rate calls.
