Survivors

Anyone watching this remake? Despite some obvious annoying flaws, it's such an interesting concept. What would you do if you survived? Do you think you would fare well or go mad and die anyway?

I haven't seen it, but from the trailers I think that the most obvious flaw is where are all the dead bodies?  Both the towns and countryside would be littered with them and the water supply corrupted as they rotted down...

The houses would be full of the Dead  (as people went home when ill) as was shown in the last couple of episodes. very few bodies in the streets but plenty were in the hospital corridors. So the survivors left for the countryside where at least the dead could be buried/burned unlike the cities and towns which would stink a bit. So all plausible so far. But some interesting challenges are thrown up by it. The countryside would be fairly sparse so more like just the odd body which by now would have been eaten by scavengers. One advantage would be that people would have more important things to talk about that the BNP in Ealing.

I was hoping to steer people away from that !

Good try

This series stars Paterson Joseph who is being tipped as the new Dr. Who. Although I think it would be great to have a black doctor, I dont think it should be Paterson (his eyes are too scary). Better to cast David (Spooks)Oyelowo.

May not be any famous people as well. But I am enjoying the series so far and I remember the old one. and some of the ideas showing how reliant we are on each other and technology makes you think about how useless we are. But given the challenges man can be quite self reliant. Sometimes when dealing with Call Centre drones dealing with you according to a script you fear that man may become extinct in 50 years. We are evolving into less self-reliant creatures????

I remember a BBC programme 30 years back called 'The Machine Stops'. Written by Em Forster, it showed how we all depended on machines and when they stopped, mankind didnt know how to cope. Can you imagine how the kids of today would survive if their mobiles, laptops, TVs all shut down? They wouldnt know what to do!

That is what heppened to one of the guys in Survivors. When  i drive along and nearly miss iPodders plodding across the road we can see that whilst we are more dependant on each other we are also drifting in to our own little worlds from which we do not want to be disturbed and yet when it goes wrong we want the world to be at our feet. Technology and Sci Fi for anyone over a certain age has a great fascination. In fact as Technology now to many is a requirement and has no wonder value then we are at a weakening point as the Human Race. The IPOD is a clever name which makes it desirable as the "I am in my POD so clear off!!" The observations in the updated Survivors are very true and relevant to today.

In Survivors the charting of a new, emerging 'society' is unnerving.  Did anyone see this weeks episode of the execution of the woman caught stealing.  This was carried out by a member of the Govt that existed prior to the virus...

That was a good aspect of it given that Power would be operated in a completely different way. Democracy would not exist. In a sense she had little choice. She had to act hard with the thief who had contempt for her. The boy was apologetic. If she had not done it then the place would have collapsed in a split between that hard and soft crowd. But then having killed one person would it be easier to kill another , then another. Given our reliance on Structures and various services modern western man is totally vulnerable to this scenario. The reality is that we would find it very difficult to survive. Those that remained might end up killing each other for trivial reasons.

Peter Chadburn ● 6508d

The 'junior minister for health' had no choice but to act hard, agreed. Survivors is sticking surprisingly closely to the original scripts. In such circumstances, all the old decent values die.

Agreed that it was important for the guy in the community who wanted to lynch both of them saw a 'trial' and 'sentence'.... I was thinking of community service myself! Re-building the permimeter fence or something of that ilk whilst living off sourdough bread and spa water....

Diane Gill ● 6508d

They're sticking surprisingly closely to the original scripts, allowing for a few cosmetic changes (I don't think any non-whites survived in the 70s!). The problem of law-and-order when you have no prison facilities is a tricky one and executions were carried out first time round too.

Susan Kelly ● 6508d

If they carried out executions for theft then I can't imagine what the sentence would be for common old garden murder?

Diane Gill ● 6508d

Anyone watching this? Barking mad but at least it's different.

Susan Kelly ● 6507d

Watched a bit of it this week - Martin Shaw as a priest (is he? or vicar or someone of the cloth) I am struggling to get past this one first!

Diane Gill ● 6507d

Going back to Survivors - This is getting better week by week.  I watched it last night then dreamt that me and my 2 year old son were 'survivors' in West Ealing.  I woke up in a real panic!

Diane Gill ● 6503d

West Ealing - humm.........wonder if there's a deep seated reson for you dreaming you were there? It is a bit of a bleak landscape, I agree.......and some of its people are strangers to courtesy.........

Penny Crocker ● 6503d

HahahaWell I live in West Ealing so hence the location!  I have some very friendly neighbours but agree it has its fair share of oddities including the people and could do with sprucing up! (Hence the £2m earmarked)

Diane Gill ● 6503d

Well at least you would have a quality supermarket to raid in Waitrose. I would panic if I only had the Sainsbury's!Having watched this for a few weeks I find myself wondering where I would head for and decided on Sandringham as I thought the royals would have a good stock of (fine) wine and food as well as hunting eqpt.

Niall Connolly ● 6503d

They've probably got their own generator, too, which would come in handy.

Susan Kelly ● 6503d

Anyone know where that gorgeous house in last night's episode was? I didn't recognise it.
