six hour power cut

The village looked fabulous in the snow last night, with no lights, a clear sky and an almost full moon. Sat by candle light, in front of an open coal fire (well gas fired coal fire to be truthful) reading books and supping wine. Bliss.

Peter, how are you finding your new life in Dorset? Would you come back to London now? Anything you miss? Where are you in Dorset? We have a flat in Christchurch and would like to move down then permanently but sadly, work and children's schools keep us here for now.

Penny, life in Milborne St Andrew is not too bad actually, people in this village are really friendly. Only have one small village shop and a post office but have thriving shopping centres in Poole & Weymouth which are easy to get to, time wise no further than Ealing from Hanwell on a bad day!Crime well below average! Went to see Slumdog Millionaire and local cinema only costs £2.50 (£3.50 weekends). Cheap car parks, open loos and of course so close to the sea for those bracing walks. We also see a lot more of our son and his family as they are only 20 minutes away.On the down side yet to find a half-way decent Indian restaurant (though we keep trying) fish and chips are also disappointing compared to our old Hanwell chippie in Boston Road. The biggest disappointment, surprisingly, has been the farmers markets, not that they are bad but West Ealing was so good. But looking forward to the summer as lots of pick your own places around.Miss our friends of course but have already had some as weekend guests and looking forward to more visits when the weather improves.We would look upon going back to live in London as a backward step.

Yes, funnily enough we find the same in Christchurch. Local restaurants are a bit of a disappointment, especially fish and chips which is odd when they catch it there ! We always feel so much more relaxed when we're there and dread coming home. The sea air makes you feel so much more alive somehow and people are friendlier. Shopping is good in Bournemouth though and so many lovely places to visit. Only problem with Bournemouth itself is there are no good pubs and we have to drive out into the countryside for that so I guess we'd miss walking to the local, which we don't do very often. We also find in Dorset (east Dorset anyway) that people aren't so clannish as they are further west. My husband comes from North Devon where even now people there hate Londoners. Glad you're settling in. After the horrible way you had to leave, it seems that good has come from it.
