Gerry and a Forum meet

Gerry says ,'I'll be back before too long - just got some family matters to attend to.  ...  I miss the gentler times on the forum.  We must get together again on a forum outing - my wife and I have discovered an excellent new(ish) Persian restaurant in W13(opp Daniel's) on the Uxbridge Road.  Suggest a forum meal in April(ish).  Whadya reckon?'So who fancies a Persian and when?

The Persian in West Ealing is the subject of much praise from my half-Iranian beautician.There have been quite a few forum meets organised, mostly, by Gerry haven't there? - not that I have been to one yet.Jim Lawes and maybe Gerry came to an Acton one once though.

Fully endorse the positive comments about the Persian Palace - but it's getting a bit TOO popular, we couldn't get in on Friday last week.  Another similar establishment two doors away, the Food Station, seems to have shut up shop, though.

Given that this forum is now dominated by two individuals with their own agenda and a few brave souls intermittantly battling them, it seems there would be hardly anyone left to meet.Look how the number of posts has declined and how the range of subjects has narrowed. It's rather sad.When nobody else posts at all, do you think they will move on?

Sara, I agree with you.  I enjoy a robust exchange of views, it can be good fun and I have often completely changed my mind about something/somebody when offered a different perspective that I hadn't considered.  However, I regret entering into debate with the two trolls, whose aim appears to be to subvert the forum to their own ends.  I will not give them any more oxygen as it is just playing into their "keyboard warrior" hands.  It will get to a point when they only have conversations with each other.

You cannot post inflammatory statements (with titles like 'one for the luvvies') without expecting a reaction. You can’t aim to trigger reactions and also argue that the reader can ignore these posts. They are designed to get a reaction. You are being disingenuous when you go all innocent and say 'just ignore it'. These posts you write are designed not to be ignored.And as for freedom of speech. You do not seem to fully understand this concept. It means not only are you free to voice your opinion but it also means that others can voice their opinions. Here’s where your concept of this freedom breaks down. You leap on any alternative view, anything that challenges or even slightly undermines your position, and try to quash it. You do not really believe in freedom of speech – you believe in freedom for your views only. And the world (including west London) has not quite gone to hell in a hand-cart.We pay compensation when people qualify for compensation. We do not withhold payment because of their believes. That is the path to individual, subjective decision-making on who can get access to legal rights or remedies. It is similar to the rights of prisoners. Yes, they are convicted criminals. Yes as prisoners they have forgone many rights and freedoms. But this is different from removing all of their rights. 200 years of prison reform manage to establish that. This is one of the marks of a civilised society. You know, the sort of society that we value.

And as for their comment re the Forum being taken over by 2 persons is visible and derisible nonsense. In fact there are those who " tread the boards " of so many Forums in their desire to make as many posts as possible, clogging up the works with matters of incosequentia. The subject matter which interests me is the greatest risk facing this country and one with which our once beloved Borough is mired in. I was in a certain " shop " in Northfields Ave. this afternoon wherein was the person in charge and a mature man, saying inter alia he used to live in Shepherds Bush. Tempting fate, I asked him what it's like now. Ruined beyond belief was the reply, but so has Ealing, Acton and Hounslow, he added. The shop custodian added her 2 pennyworth by saying it's all not as it was or should be but taken over by " you know who ". Neither needed any prompting from me, and were most vehement with what has happened in the past 10 years in particular. Such views are those held by the vast majority of the British public, so one should be proud for holding them, and not the objects of abuse and the feelings of self loathing held and suffered by others.

Personal abuse is wrong - no disagreement there. But it does seem to be fairly evenly balanced.And 'tread the boards' - please, not using the term luvvie but using that phrase instead is pathetic. It does not avoid the problem and its not clever. Drop it.As for inconsequentia...not sure what the problem is here. Surely the AMJA rule of 'ignore it' is most applicable. If its inconsequential then its not exactly offensive - so not even worth commenting on. There is definitely no rule that the forum is only for matters of gravitas. I think your note is in part at least a defense of our AMJA's previous post. So please let me point out the irony that he suggests ignoring even the most inflammatory posts but you feel its suitable to comment on inconsequential posts.

It will get to a point when they only have conversations with each other. While the luvvies sit back and watch the country sink further in to the abyss.
