Sleep tight & don't let the bugs bite!
Report in the news today:'It's the kind of news that immediately sets you itching - bedbugs are on the rise. Pest controllers are reportng a huge jump in call-outs to deal with infestations at hotels and on public transport.In some instances, victims of the blood-sucking cimex lectularius which can grow to 5mm - have needed hospital treatment.Bedbugs - which hide in small crevices during the day and are most active in the hour before dawn - were substantially eliminated during the 20th century but figures sho infestations doubling each year between 1995-2001. Experts say the bedbugs have become more common because of our transient lifestyle. They are attracted by exhaled carbon-dioxide and body heat - but not dirt.Environmental health officers dealt with infestations at a dozen hotels in London last year. The insects were also found in hotels in Bristol, Birmingham, Sheffield, Liverpool, Edinburgh and Glasgow - including a £270 a night establishment.In one instance a guest had to go to casualty after developing blood poisioning in a bitten leg. Another woman told how she woke up to find herself anf her partner covered by hundreds of bedbugs.Rentokill reported a 40% rise in call-outs to bedbugs in trains, busses, planes and coaches.I hope this doesn't put anyone off travelling! Feel like scracthing now???? Ugh!
