Schools to get more recycling facilities

Here is the Press Release:"Recycling services for schools to be boosted (PR 1413)More than 500 tonnes of waste will no longer go straight to landfill each year following a decision by Ealing Council’s cabinet last night to increase recycling services to local schools.The £160,000 programme will include the purchase of a special recycling vehicle to collect food waste and cardboard from schools across the borough.   Food waste bins will be provided for school canteens, wheelie bins for outside storage, and cardboard recycling bins. All will be emptied weekly.The new service is in addition to the current paper and cans collection service provided by the council.Research conducted on waste in schools has shown that each year the new service could collect around 380 tonnes of recyclable food waste, and more than 200 tonnes of cardboard from borough schools.To support the introduction of the new recycling collections, presentations will be made at all schools to inform pupils about correct waste disposal and the importance of recycling.Councillor Sue Emment, Cabinet Member for Environment and Street Services, said: “We are committed to continually improving our recycling services, and it is great that we are expanding services to include food waste and cardboard at schools.”“This new programme will reduce the amount of food waste and cardboard ending up in landfill, and will give pupils valuable information about how to be responsible with their rubbish.”“The free recycling collection scheme will also help schools to reduce the cost of disposing of their waste.”   “To maximise our success it is important for all teachers, school staff school governors, and pupils to get involved. The council is looking forward to working more closely with local schools to roll out the programme.”"

I notice that the UK Youth Parliament have a campaign for all schools to have free recycling services.  You would have thought that this was a fundamental requirement.

It's our (pardon the pun) collective fault.We vote in politicians who are seemingly incapable of cursive script let alone joined-up thinking regardless of their academic, or otherwise, achievements. Commonsense is not a word I associate with many politicians.Of course it should be fundamental in schools. It's where recycling should have started and then extended to the wider community.But, and it's a big but, schoolchildren can't be fined £80 for doing the wrong thing.

Problems recently will have been market prices but the prices are going up.Allowing schools to collect for their own specific projects for at least part of the time or with part of the collection might help with input.  In some Councils organisations can 'adopt' specific recycling bins.  This means that they can do their own promotion of their charity towards which the proceeds gained from the collection go.  No point though when the price has dropped through the floor though.
