advice on staying put or moving out during building work

hello there, we are about to have a loft conversion and some other big work done - first time ever. Any advice on whether it is realistic to stay put while the builders are in? And if not, any tips on how to find cheap or even free (house sitting) temporary local accommodation while it all goes on? I was thinking of putting up postcards in local shops to see if anyone wants their house looking after -but there may be a better way? Oh yes and if anyone has a caravan to let on a site to the west of London, let me know!thanks

Hi Belinda, my friends had a loft conversion and stayed put. I'd ask the advice of the builders doing the work. Also you could try posting on the Chiswick forum as more people seem to reply there.

Hi Belinda I had a loft conversion and a doormer built to house a bathroom and study. I stayed put and I have a two year old son too! You only notice the mess when the stairs are put in around 2 weeks before completion. Whilst I don't think it is necessary to move it was a struggle to keep the house clean due to the dust. Plus I also underestimated how much extra decorating I would need to do on areas seemingly unaffected by the loft conversion - the hallway was practically re-decorated plus staining the new fire doors etc. I would be happy to talk in more detail if you wish, just email me.

Hi Belinda. We had a rear extension done a few years ago and had no choice but to stay put. Admittedly it was a nightmare, and I still don't know how we managed to stay sane! No matter how well you tape up the rooms, dust will still get EVERYWHERE, so be prepared. I don't think a loft conversion is as intrusive until the stairs go in, but by then the end is near, so it might be a bit more bearable! As Diane said, be prepared to redecorate the hallway, as you may want to match the new stairs to the existing ones and 'hide the join'. I wish you well!
