As reflected in time use surveys of women and men of how they spend their time, tasks associated with typically male domestic areas of responsibility include DIY repairs and gardening. Examples of stereotypically masculine domestic chores outsourced to handymen include landscaping and lawn care, assembling garden sheds, paving driveways, repairing fences, changing locks, replacing taps, fixing leaks, mounting shelves, hanging pictures and mirrors, attaching fixtures, painting and decorating, etc. Granted, not all households have such a division of labour, and there is some generational change as well where the gender boundaries are blurring - our research explores the way in which men and women with children divide paid and unpaid work and how outsourcing fits here.
