Advice Required - Broken Floor Lamp

Recently my lovely floor lamp that has served me well over a number of years broke. I did the usual and changed the bulb (several times) but still not working.  I thought I would then check to see if it was the fuse. Having looked at the plug it is one of those moulded ones that you cannot open.  The only thing I can think of is to cut off the cord, buy a new plug and re-wire it which seems a bit of a palava especially if it isn't the fuse!  Any ideas/suggestions as I don't want to go out and buy a new lamp quite yet?

Yes it does, I wondered if it could be that but have no way of testing.

All 13amp plugs have to have a fuse,even moulded on ones,some are sneaky and have a hidden flap on the side that has the pins.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BS_1363You may need a small screwdriver to prise it out.If the fuse has "gawn" then something probably caused it and a new one may go again. Most likely cause is a duff cord,has it been tugged? Second is as has been mentioned the switch not working.Maybe City Electrical in Bond St. could help?

By the time you have gone to a shop for them to look at it, it would probably have been be easier and cheaper in the long run to go and buy a new lamp.I know that you want to conserve wasting items, but if you can't test the flex and can't change the plug.....

F Stone - have you looked at how much floor lamps cost?  I would also have to buy a table lamp to match.  Most floor lamps that are of a decent design are £150 plus around £40-£60 for a table lamp.  So with that in mind you can see why I am keen to try and mend it!

Yes I know how much some floor lamps can cost and I can understand why you want to mend the one you have. I was only saying that if you can't test whether or not the flex has a loose connection, or the plug needs a fuse... Ikea have a good range of floor lamps with matching table lamps that don't cost the earth.If your floor lamp can be repaired without costing a lot of money then that that is the best option.

If you cannot repair the lamp yourself, then you could try the lighting shop in Acton where you can get old fashioned service.

Many thanks for all your helpful advice.  A very kind person from the Forum contacted me, came round and sorted out the lamp!  It is now fully working again and I feel a bit of a dumb blonde having not spotted the screw for the plug under a sticker - DOH!
