Tescos on Pitshanger Lane

I understand that Tesco has approached the landlords of 113-115 Pitshanger Lane about opening a store.

I sincerely hope this rumour is untrue.  If Northfield Avenue is anything to go by, then Pitshanger Lane is in for serious congestion by huge Tesco lorries queuing up to unload at all times of day.  There is not enough space for them.

Interesting too that the recent £170,000 speed/safety makeover in Northfield Ave never understood that the speed oops safety camera (cost to the public = £38,000 + on costs) is regularly rendered impotent by being obscured by the multiple delivery lorries supporting Tesco. J. Clarkson please note.

And those same lorries have no qualms about parking across the zig zags of the zebra crossing either.

it is not the parking you should be worried about but the destruction of independant shops. fight this or die

As I understand it the jury is out on whether the arrival of a Tescos damages independent traders. Obviously if your business is in direct competition with them you are in trouble but the stores always increase footfall to the area so other businesses benefit.

one only has to look at the Tesco on Northfield Avenue to see that the increased footfall does not benefit the local traders there

Also, there is a perfectly good Co-op on Pitshanger Lane and I actually think their food and wine is better than Tesco.

Re  think their food and wine is better than Tesco.           xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx food maybe , wine I would have thought to be the same in every store if from the same vineyard, but my experience of Co-op stores in Southampton is they are hopelessly uncompetitive, even on basics such as milk. And fruit and veg the same.

I had a bizarre experience with a Tesco staff member the other day. I'd been shopping in West Ealing and on Northfield Avenue and had a large and full carrier bag of stuff. I was almost home when I realised I still needed one more thing which probably would only be available from Tesco in the area. I went in, but they didn't have what I was looking for, so I left again and continued walking down Northfield Avenue. Half way across the road at Camborne Ave a staff member caught up with me at a run, stopped me, and the following exchange took place:Tesco: Can I just have a look in your bag?me: Why?Tesco: I just want to see if there's anything in there.me [looking down at the full carrier bag, and then back up at the person who had accosted me]: There is a lot of things in there.Tesco: [looks at me with a sad expression as if he's about to start crying, then turns around and literally runs back to Tesco]I have no idea what that was all about. Presumably he had some suspicion that I had stolen something, in which case why was he unable to articulate that, and if he had a good reason to believe so, why did he run away without ensuring I hadn't got away with shoplifting?

Tesco is fortunate that their staff member has not tried anything like that with me. The action you describe leaves them liable to a damages claim. They have no right to stop you unless they have reasonable suspicion that you have actively avoided making due payment for their goods, i.e. shoplifting.  It is for this reason that even if they have basically watched someone conceal an item - reasonable suspicion - they have to wait till the till point is passed so that there is a clear intent not to pay.I did work in retail decades ago and whilst I hate thieves, our overriding concern was not to end up in the sort of embarrassment you describe.Keep supporting our valued local businesses.
