food scrap bins

Just got my brand spanking new food scrap bin looks absolutely fantastic sitting on my kitchen bench... What a waste of tax payers money if the council has that much spare cash why don't they take another fact finding tour of other countries and see how they handle their waste I think they would find no other country would waste thousands of pounds on such a pathetic idea. There again perhaps there can be a use for these recycled food scraps turn them into a government funded sausages.

Have you ever looked at a graph of the rising costs and levies re waste removal and its processing?Greater control over waste separation affords opportunity for greater control over cost control.So unless you have details of the projected financial return on this investment, are you chancing your arm as to whether this is, or is not, a pathetic idea?

I'm not saying about waste removal I just think there must be a better way, How many more waste bins do we need remembering that most homes and flats have only galley type kitchens where space is at a premium without sticking silly looking green bins around the place. Maybe the money spent on these bins would have been better spent on finding a way of repackaging supermarket products with a more biodegradable wrapping. And please don’t quote levies and graphs at me we all know there is a problem.  But I personally don’t think this is the way forward, what happens if these bins get damaged and need to be thrown away are they not made of plastic and although recyclable still has a cost factor to it.

Perhaps they should be available in a range of colours?Haven't got mine yet, so don't know what size it is or anything about it except that food I can't compost and have thrown away can be put in there.If it removes a food source for the vermin like Foxes, then it can only be a good thing.

It does sound like a good idea, I have to admit. I believe they are actually supplying biodegradable bags that you put inside to keep the waste in.If as you say they keep the foxes from trashing bags and gardens then I am all for it.

Foxes are most definitely a large part of the problem, I try and put my waste out in the morning but I did notice today that there was more waste than usual strewn throughout the street. It surprises me that most people see the damage that foxes cause but still put their waste out in the early evening the night before collection. If you work why not put your bins out before you leave.

Have just looked on the council website at their policy regarding foxes. They don't do anything to help residents that have a problem with them. They just advise to keep all perishables locked up which should deter them. Unfortunately this is not always the case - many foxes come into gardens and cause untold destruction to plants and garden furniture, they are not always on the lookout for food. What can be done about this?

A neighbour of mine had a fox enter her home a few years ago and made its way up to her spare bedroom in its frightened state it caused a lot of damage but when she rang the council they asked if it was hurt when she told them she didn’t think so they told her there was nothing they would do. It was later that she decided to ring again and told them she thought it had broken its leg, only then did they come to remove the animal.

How long was it in the house for?Thats what happens, they'll be sitting on the sofa watching the TV and ordering fried chicken next.After those girls got bitten a few weeks ago, Boris said that local authorities had a duty to deal with fox vermin, seems like Ealing don't think so.

I believe it was in there for a few hours she told me there was excrement everywhere. Not a pretty sight I would imagine. But it’s the same with rats. My mother found a dead rat in the back garden, when she rang the council they told her to put it in a bag and take it to the front of the house where they would collect it. I think they had more chance of asking my mother to fly to Australia because I don’t know what scares her more rats or flying.

It is disappointing that these can't be put out for collection instead of the the larger one.These sorts of caddies are available from many shops and not pricy so I don't know what the problem is with putting them out for collection.  They lock too.

So since the small ones lock - why can't we put them out for collection instead of the larger ones?  They are easier to wash out than the bigger ones and take up less space in the home - ideal for when there aren't many people at home and you've managed to make very little food waste.

I have been recycling food waste for years and I think the bins are a great idea. I now recyle about 90% of my waste so only have to put rubbish out about once a month.

I agree with the original thread. These small caddies are a complete waste of money, I wrap waste food up in old newspaper and put it into the food wase bin that the council collect there was no need to supply a smaller one, to use befor placing in to a bigger one, and certainly no need to make degradable bags (at 8p each) to put the food in. Recycling means to re-use, it's much more enviromentaly friendly use old newspaper, than to actually manufacture bags for the waste, actually it was a ridiculus idea, I cant see one benefit.

I presumed the idea was to try and encourage those who didn't already to have a go at separating their food waste.  Until you do this you are unlikely to see exactly what and how much you are wasting and realise how you can adjust this and probably save money as well.We've always found an old tub to use if the food waste bin wasn't available on the spot.  What is it now that people have to have something made for purpose all the time and can't improvise?  Where's the vision?  I noticed that LB Hounslow suggest that you use your shredded paper ie shredded personal papers to line the bin to soak up any liquid that collects in the bottom and help make it easier to clean.Oxford City Council provide a first roll of compostable bags and also a diagram showing how to fold the newspaper to line the bin.

I've always used my own recepticles and newspaper, but some people are so lazy that this is too much effort for them to organise. I think the bins are to encourage lazy people to recycle.
