Save the Forum cinema, one of 4 cinemas I knew in my childhood:Walpole (Bond St)Palladium (Broadway)Forum (Broadway)Lido (West Ealing)

Thats interesting Mary. I came to Ealing in the late 70s. The Lido and Forum/ABC were there. The Walpole was a carpet shop but I enjoyed walking around looking at what was a nice cinema.The Palladium wasnt there..it was WHSmiths. Do yoi know when it closed? What was it like?

Don't forget the Odeon Northfields, now a church.  The Palladium as I remember it was rather grand, with a large balcony and impressive foyer.  I think it must have closed in the 60s but not sure.

The Palladium closed about the time I left school in 1955, or maybe even the year before.  It had a circle and a balcony above that and I can remember throwing empty crisp packets over to the stalls (very naughty in those days!).I think it had been a variety theatre before as it was quite an ornate building from what I remember.Pat Kingham has reminded me that there was in fact a 5th cinema, the Northfields Odeon which is now a church.The girls from Notting Hill & Ealing High School used to meet the St Benedict's boys in Jo Lyons teashop which ran in an 'L'-shape from near what is now Sainsbury's, right through to its other entrance on the station approach where the fish-and-chip shop is now. I also remember the bomb which fell opposite Sanders where Lilley and Skinners (Saxone) --- I could go on!

I remember the Odeon in South Ealing. I went to the last evening before it closed (but at least they havent pulled it down).I remember reading that the Palladium used to be a music hall and horse-drawn hasom cabs would be seen outside.I found this amazibg photo of the bom that hit John Sanders

Love the old Pathe news - see earlier post - of the Forum being built. Can't help thinking that the pile of rubble before cinema was uilt looks familiar. There's also unknowingly a certain amount of irony in the managers comments later in movie clip.

Seems the cinema in Hammersmith is also under threat from the new Town Hall plan. I know it's a flea pit, but it always shows at least one art-house film and do we really want nothing but soulless Vues all over west London?

What we neeed is a cinema for the 21st century. And thats IMAX. So many films are now released in 3D and IMAX format following the success of Avatar. Wimbledon has IMAX. This could be a great pull for Ealing..the only one in West London. The multiplexes couldnt compete.

I signed the petition. Of course.I am and have always been a great fan of "film".And I want younger people who want a Friday/Saturday night out (away from their parents) to have somewhere to go.But I have to confess, I now have two HUGE (and expensive) plasma screens at home, and prefer to sit in comfort to watch a film, without the smell and annoying chomping noise of popcorn and the chatter of rude people around me.So, I probably won't go there - and I think that may be the problem.Is it right to ask people to sign a petition "even if they never go to the cinema?I am just asking, that's all ..... ?If it gets re-built, I hope it is patronised by the people who asked for it. (Or their children!).
