Many are not ripening but going brown. Why?

Its tomato blight. There is a lot around this year.Burn the plants to avoid infection next year. Don't put them on your compost heap.

Ah, may not be blight, its been an awful year weatherwise, in the UK for growing tomato plants, been good for peas though....
