Yes, both good news. Kerbisher and Malt actually opens tomorrow I believe.Also, I've heard a rumour that the former newsagents/convenience store across the road from Costa on the High Street is to become a toy shop. Only a rumour, mind you.Pleasing to see that retailers and restaurateurs now appear to view EB as an attractive place to expend their businesses. Pinning hopes on Crossrail perhaps? Or maybe Dickens Yard, for all its detractors, is having a genuine regenerative effect.

Charles, Have you seen/heard anything on a potential opening date for the Wagamamas on the High Street. There is a planning notice up at present, but work has not yet begun.Just wondered if you'd come across anything since you seem remarkably well-informed about local developments!

unsure you were being rude or genuinely wanted to know ill assume the latter.Wagamama have stated there is no real desire in them rushing to have it complete.ideally a clause was to see improvments to the arches design which is why work is now underway.Wagamama also enquired about Karma & La COnfidential but unsure what has happened about this

Apologies if I led their to believe the SPortDirect will reopen anywhere near the Broadway centreDiane you are right in the sense a bigger location is requiredI can see it opening in a similar format to the Greenford Westway or Hayes Lombardy storesI really dont know where exactly however theyve adviertised it as the "New Hangar Lane A406 store"

I did not know that the Town House pub was to become a Metro Bank.  That is really disappointing to learn.  It should stay as a pub (a nice one) and keep a bit of Ealing's history. Shame.

Charles,Right to assume the latter! My comments about you being in the know were genuinely meant!It's helpful to be able to find out what stores, restaurants and so forth are opening. Over the past year, there seems to be a trend of empty units across the Broadway being filled (Jessops, Kerbisher & Malt, Toy Galaxy, Xanadu, ChimiChangas, and soon Metro Bank and Wagamamas). It's a nice contrast to the cheap takeaways and pound shops that have proliferated in West Ealing.

I took a look at the planning application. From the name of the applicant, it seems like it will be a home furnishings store.

Given the effort they have put in to sprucing up this unit it could be a good addition to Northfields Ave.. unlike the tasteless shopfronts errected by the other new residents Kathmandu and Spice Magic.

Flower Shop which closed a while back on  Bond Street now is to become Firezza (Gourmet Pizza Chain)Site below the Gym Group in West Ealing to become a Health/Clinic as agents conffirmed despite the intention there were no retail takeups for the site.

Are you sure about this? Is this a private healthcare clinic as NHS NW Lndon do not show it on their plans?2008 plans had Daniels down for an NHS Integrated Care Centre, but the PFI money collapsed as did the plans.Latest rumour from neighbouring Five Roads Forum is that Morrisons is in for the Daniels ground level 'cavern' - empty now for over four years.

don't knock the pound shops. Used with common sense they help millions of people on low incomes with their budgets. At 75 and on a pension I find many of their products are incredible value.

Sorry for the delay in responding Alan,I can sense you sweating about wanting to have Morrisons opening to rejuvenate West Ealing instead of a clinic :) (or so those on WEN tell me)Anyway you are right Morrisons will open, however any ideas which Unit? as far as I know 96-122 underneath Gym Group consist of 304 UnitsThe healthclinic (company is called InHealth) have inquired about Unit 2, if that helps.

Charles,There is now a formal planning application from Morrisons for the eastern third of the space. So it will be a 'Morrisons Light'. What its impact on the Tesco Express 100 yards west is anyone's guess. I guess the small independent mini-market almost across the road from Lovelace House/Daniels will struggle to compete with Tesco and Morrisons.Presumably 'InHealth' is a private company? No doubt you will know this.

from what I know, yes its a private companyTesco rightfully deserve to have its revenue shared with other retail stores, and if its Morrisons light (or M-Local?) then so be itThe mini market across the road?? Yes there is one opposite CastleBar pub, if you are reffering to this, then it loosk tired and dated, although the recent plannign approval to make this a lunch/takeaway shop will help its takings.

Both but I haven't visited since last year.The Pooles pies are OK but there's a pie shop near Wigan bus station that does the best steak pie I have ever tasted, but I can't remember the name of it.

So Iceland is closing down at the end of the month. Anyone know whats happening? This could be a great step forward for the high street given the clientele that such a place brings in to the town centre.  Fingers crossed its replaced by a Waitrose rather than a pound store..

sorry tpo see Iceland in Ealing close. Their stuff if mostly good value for money. Hope their branch in West Ealing stays open.  As to Waitrose I can't comment having never shopped their in the thirty five years I have been in Ealing. On the odd occasion I did I thought it was over rated.

Waitrose is good but, paradoxically, not as good as it used to be before they replaced the original store with the giant shiny new one.Much has been done of late to bring prices into line, but prior to this move (having been brought on by the recent global financial crisis that is hurting everybody in the pocket) I reckon their prices were running at maybe 20% above the other supermarkets on a basket-for-basket basis.When perambulating around the country I find that it is the smaller stores (the "express" style ones aside) that offer the more fulfilling shopping "experience".  Counterintuitive I know, but the missus agrees with me, so it must be true!  :-)

I'm pretty sure the Waitrose West Ealing store is one of the best performing of all their stores.I suppose you would also ask why a Morrisons in Acton? Why a Rolls Royce dealer in Hanwell? Anything else?For those that know Dennis Frost, neighbourhood co-ordinator for Ealing I asked him at the ward forum the other day regarding Charles Asante, funnily enough his disappearance of this forum relates to a complaint from forum users?Now I'm not sure if he made personal attacks although difficult to tell with his posts but the info given was very useful and gave the forumites a good idea of what's to comeIf a user did report him for a poor reason, shame on you and I hope you provide as much useful info to the forum as he did.There's also a few other users that have disappeared, again for reason unknown, this forum is quite bitchy and it seems there is an obvious dislike to those that have inside info despite it being for the benefit of others.

Could we get back onto the subject? There's another welcome addition to the shopping scene in Ealing on Ealing Green, where Baby-e (or something like that) used to be.  It's a shop called All Original selling the work of local artists and craftspeople, all of them indeed original, handmade and LOCAL. It's taken a long time, but things do seem to be looking up again on this little parade of shops since the riots devastated it - the convenience store has re-opened (used to be Ealing Green Local, now a Spar, but still run by the same people) and hopefully the Green Mango Café will be able to re-open soon. So why not stop sniping at each other, people, and get out there supporting local businesses?

Hear, hear, Christine.Regarding Green Mango Cafe, the Gazette reported on its front page last week that Zakar, the owner, is being asked to pay business rates for the 18 months the cafe has been closed. As anyone who has followed Zakar's attempts to get the business on its legs again will know (and as the paper reports), he's running very short of money so this could force him to declare himself bankrupt. A truly sad state of affairs stemming from one night of wanton destruction. I'm not sure if it's a question of the council stepping in to sort out the situation but it would be a tragedy if this scuppered Zakar's plans to reopen.

Ridiculus. The buisness rates he had been paying, prior to the riots went to pay for the police to protect his property. Which on that night they failed to do. It wasnt a case of the police officers being unable to stop the rioters. It was that they were told to let the rioters get on with it. The buisness should be getting money back for services paid for but not provided. Btw I do not put the blame on the officers but whoever it wasthat decided to sit back and do nothing to stop the rioters all over britain. Shouldve used water cannons or fire hoses on them.

R Gill,I'm not certain that was the case - I think he was insured but, surprise surprise, the insurers took an eternity to agree to pay and it took a lot of pressure from Angie Bray too (other forum members will be better placed to confirm this). I'm sure when and if he does open, he will be well supported by the local community, but charging rates for the period he was closed just stinks and Ealing Council should (but won't) hang their head in shame for even considering this charge as applicable...

R Gill,Bud is right - he was insured. This is confirmed in an earlier Gazette article (http://www.ealinggazette.co.uk/ealing-news/local-ealing-news/2012/12/14/riot-hit-green-mango-misses-xmas-reopening-64767-32429323/). I only know what I've read in the media, but it sounds like Zakar has gone about things in absolutely the right way - both before and after the riots - but has struggled to get the support he needs from insurers, the council etc.As Bud says, let's hope he gets the full support of the community when he reopens (assuming he does manage to get everything in place). Fingers crossed.
